| Show grasshopper CONTROL harold R hagan so many requests for inborn information la regarding the control of grasshoppers are being received at the utah agricultural college that the department of entomology believes the following formula for poisoning them should be more widely known and ap pled bran 20 lbs ibs white arsenic or paris green I 1 ib syrup 2 ats water ai I 1 gal lemons or oranges orange 3 there are two fairly fai irly success full ways of mixing these ingredients ilien ts 1 mix alix the arsenic or paris paria green thoroughly with the bran taking carel care to see that the poison does not merely sift through on to the floor mix the syrup rind and water then add the lemons which have been previously chopped and crushed now add the liquid to the loiso poiso poisoned ned bran slowly so that the latter will not ball up tip into lumps 2 2 this metho dof mixing differs from the in that the arsenic is mixed with the liquids instead of the bran it should be remembered that the poison is not lot soluble and quickly settles to io the bottom of the bucket so that to be effective the liquid in this case should be constantly and a nd very thoroughly stirred A little less water should also be used at first and the balance added later to rinse the remaining poison from t 0 as noison from the bucket remember that the water must be added ve very slowly and thoroughly worked into the bran only I 1 thorough mixing insures that a I 1 every ary part particle lele or of bran braff wll will haw have softie loftie poison OW it carelessly fali mixed formulas result in lor loss s of poi poison 1 kofl felch bran I 1 and I 1 the rest reit with so much that the illg insects ectA may not eat cat it when ahert the biking is finished fini dished the poisoned bradli shoud be just damp enough so do that it ft handful squeezed tip will retain the impression of the fingers a few moments then slowly crumble apart as the grip is rel relaxed aked scatter the poisoned bran in the late afternoon in in the infested area if possible the sowing of the p poison ison should follow soon after irrigation hs as the damp grund keeps the bran damp considerably sider ably longer the hoppers e eat at it while it is damp but pay no attention to it after it has become dry remember that arsenic a and nd paris r green reen are poisons they should not come in contact with the hinds hands or face children and farm animals should be kept away from the mixing shed and the poisoned bran re remove move the poisoned bran from the shoes before walking out into the yard keep chickens out of the poisoned fields for more detailed methods of control of these pests write to the utah agricultural experiment station logan utah and ask for bulletin no 13 the bulletin on page reco recommends gallons of water which is too much it will be ba lund L und that gallons are amply sufficient |
