Show I 1 TIKES PIKES PEAK HIGHWAY T avery A very important one to the people 3 of the roosevelt and the i uintah basin by J P may no doubt many of the people who read this in the papers of the ithe uintah basin will have learn aed ed something of the efforts of ithe thi commercial clubs to make permanent er manent the national highway i through the uintah basin othere there has been an awakening in the united states in the last two or three years con concerning berning ning the necessity for a larger number of g national highways running fast and west from coast to a coast and south and north from the gulf to the canadian border the war has recently aided the i good work by proving the great necessity for such highways there are a number of highways running east and west from coast to coast and we are glad lad to th say one of the most well known and best advertised is the pikes peak ocean to ocean highway 11 this highway has been een extensively routed through the uintah basin for the last hwo two or three years but because of the very poor roads and the utter 1 lack ck of operation cooperation co of the people ople of the basin much of the traffic had bac been n i diverted at colorado 0 springs while m many ny of the ir autos that came over the mountain into western colorado went round by grand junction instead of coming through the bain the secretary of the national highway association mr I ten iten lerson of colorado springs has effort 1 tk to been en untiring in his iq 4 the aland country to unite a a suitable road from h colorado line to the western dge ge of the basin abo about ut two reeks ago the national conven ion on of the national association jf ras S hel held at S I 1 joseph missouri I 1 t was then apparent to the local citizens eizens that had kept in touch nth th the situation that unless the asin sn imm immediately mediately edia tely got busy this lithway way would be lost to us A hurried call was made and legates from several commer i A n al I 1 clubs met at roosevelt and without money in the treasury nl two delegates to the na onal convention mr air george S oan of myton and ana mr roxe R pe of duchesne mr dean at 10 ahe was also selected but 0 was unable to go the sum was agreed would be aven en to the delegates to be died pro rata although this lount would scarcely pay the benses of one delegate but the 0 delegates who went spent me e of their I 1 own money to 0 1761 atil ike e up the deficit wasatch lity commissioners saw fit send mr harvey a live citi who is well known to the ay sin in and he was of material si istance stance to the delegates rough the efforts of our dele es we were able to convince s national convention conventi of the sity for routing the high y through the basin in ord succeed however in getti getting ing chent ent support to route the d through our inland empire I 1 ros s necessary for our deleo to assure the convention it athe the uintah basin would ce e hold of the matter with f and vigor and that the citi 3 of the basin and especially se elivna eliV living ng near the highway m d come to pur our assistance almoney lm oney and by furnishing r in m the immediate improve of I 1 the ehigh highway way inen an the result of several lint rs 8 of OI 01 experience shows the etsity UY of organizing a state ision ai on of the national assoria this state division is to ade up of county units du ne e county y has perfected its lili kilili ii niza animation tion uintah county as e its to 6 organize within a few 11 i we understand wasatch t will vm berf at its the very verb near future highway through utah will join the tha arrow head trail at provo or salt lake when uintah duchesne and wasatch counties shall have organized it is expected that delegates from each of the three coRa counties tiep w will meet at heber city and will there consider cons laer ways and means to continue the highway either down pro provo io canyon or via park city into salt la lake ke city the route depending on which line will give the most assistance if the trail comes down provo canyon through heber city it will then join the arrow head trail leavi leaving fig salt lake out while if it goes to park city and from there to salt lake it will officially connect with the ar row head trail at salt lake it is the belief 0 of f the local citizens who have taken part in the aie recent meetings held to consider the matter that after our eastern utah units are ready for action that we can induce the arrow head tr trail aal organization to 0 o perfect the same scheme in organizing the same county divisions and have the trail go south to the arizona line or into the state of nevada as the case may maybe be we understand the airow I 1 I 1 head trail goes gees via or near st george so that the side trip into the little zion Wonder wonderland lard may bs be possible it is hoped that the people of eastern utah will rally to the support of this national highway if we do our respective parts each shouldering a fair responsibility the burden danwill will bs be light and we will soon have a hard surface road from astern utah to salt lake or provo through which thousands of tourists will annu annually ally pass on their way arm the east to the west the uintah basin has a virtual switzerland in mountain scenery and natural wonders we have thousands of lakes the highest mountains in the state great caves yet unexplored nearly the same proportion of the states total water supply surely enough to make this a desirable sh able part of the west in the near future people from the states larger cities will find that the uintah mountains in ther the summer afford a retreat even better than the yellowstone national park every person who owns land adjoining this val dional highway will have the value of the saime materially increased by reason of the land I 1 bordering such an important thoroughfare the land owners adjoining the road can ill afford to neglect in contributing a small amount of money or labor or a little of both which is ab sol necessary |
