Show FOREST SERVICE NOTES about eighteen per cent of the lumber used in utah southern idaho and lincoln and uinta counties wyoming in 1915 was cut from timber growing locally according oc to data just compiled by y the forest service two hundred and three sawmills within this territory reported a cut of board feet of lumber in 1915 in addition to the lumber sawed there was about 50 million board feet of local material cut and used in other forms such as posts poles mining props and hewed railroad ties the best estimates available show that idaho utah nevada and lincoln and uinta counties wyoming use for all purposes about million board feet of wood material annually these figures indicate that approximately 80 per cent of the material used comes from timber lands outside this region although it is estimated that there is over 29 billion board feet of timber still standing within the territory listed forest service officials state that the timber growing locally ally if accessible to transportation facilities would be sufficient the entire needs of the region for a period of fifty years without reducing the growing stand the excessive cost of mountain logging as compared with cost of logging on the coast and the low prices prevailing for imported lumber k finast fi past year have bave combined to keep ee p the production of local lumbe fiat ait a minimum the indications now however po point int to a gradual but steady increase in the local production of lu toVer and wood material with a corresponding decrease in importations |
