Show FORT DUCHESNE MILITARY reservation last winter a bill was intro I du deuced ced asking the U S to revert the military reservation at ft duchesne to the state of utah it was thought at theotime the time that the fort contained a little less than acres but when the bill was introduced it was found to benonly be only acres aca res hon wm win oneil wrote to the authorities at washington to find out what became of the other land the following letter explains the situation tia tion department of the interior general land office washington may 2 1916 mr william oneil roosevelt utah my dear sir 4 1 I am in receipt by reference from the war department of your letter dated january 14 1916 making inquiry with res rea hect to the disposition of lands formerly within the ft duchesne military reservation utah in response you are advised that said reservation was turned over to this department by executive order of august 19 1912 no 1579 under the decision I 1 of the department dated september 19 1911 the lands within said abandoned military reservation are part of the former uinta indian reservation which was their status prior to the reservation of the land for military purposes I 1 am informally advised by the indian office that the lands in said abandoned military reservation are being allotted to indians none of said lands have been opened to settlement and entry and I 1 know of no present prospect of the lands being thus opened some of the lands in the former uinta indian reservation are being disposed of by the superintendent of the school at ft duehesne duchesne utah who can give you any information desired relative there to very respectfully C M BRUCE assistant commissioner |
