where is situated the headquarters of the uinta indian reservation the amount of good land susceptible cep tible to irrigation near roosevelt is astonishing literally hundreds of miles of canals have been built by the united states government and by private irrigation companies putting water within the reach of thousands of acres of land uinta basin of which roosevelt is the center contains over acres of tillable land the greater part of is irrigable nearly half of this is now being furnished with water by the various irrigation projects the importance v of irrigated lands can be appreciated precia ted when it is known that in in the entire state of utah less than acres are suseen susceptible of irrigation between one half and two thirds of the arri g aska e land of the state therefore lies in inginia inU inia basin the land atso is of an excellent quality being for the most part in the roosevelt district a rich sandy loam or clay wheat oats barley ard aid ai d corn flourish in it t the wheat crop this year ln in the basin will surpass that th a t of any other section of the state both in quantity and quality unless it bs be cache valley fruits can call also bs be raised with ease delicious apples pears peaches cherries plums strawberries raspberries rasp berries and other fruits have already been produced although in comparatively small qu quantities ariti the development of this industry particularly will largely depend first on the improvement of roads in the basin and second on the construction of a railroad by several experiments it has been demonstrated that the soil of uinta county especially near roosevelt is perhaps the best beat adapted in the state for the cultivation ti of sugar beets and potatoes neither vegetable has been grown on a large scale but with coming of the railroad they give promise of becoming immense sources of wealth stock raising 11 possibilities settlers in and around roosevelt are feeling more and more thal that stock raising is at present at least one of the most profitable pursuits possible to the basin the local market for meat I 1 is s considerable and much of the stock can be shipped out at highly profitable prices it is in fact the one product which is not greatly handicapped by the absence of railroad facilities the stock can be driven to one of several railroad points and loaded without excessive cost many farmers have learned that small herds of cattle sheep and hogs are valuable assets aside from the main business of raising hay or grain alfalfa can be raised in abundance and when the market for it is not brisk it ean can be used profitably to feed our own stock cattle raising will always be an important industry in the basin but it will be conducted much differently than several years ago two decades part cart large herds roamed over uinta continued continued 4 |
