Show THOUGHT IT STILL DUTCH englishwoman decidedly behind the times in her knowledge of things of the united states some one at luncheon had bad tola a story about an englishwoman who said she sha had been shocked to learn leara how slow the trains were in america and on being told that they were nothing of the sort insisted but they must be I 1 saw in a paper that it took look 24 11 hours to go from new york to chicago and the company had bad laughed watkins had laughed with the others then watkins said a pretty good story but I 1 know one better its a remark that was made to me go on offered the man who had told the story about the trains you give us your word its true 1 I give you my word its true watkins echoed it was at a hotel in switzerland where I 1 being alone chanced to be put at a table with several englishwomen englishwoman English women at dinner we fell to talking as one always does about traveling abroad and about languages and hotel and train vocabularies and all that they knew that I 1 was an american of course 1 I happened to say that I 1 could could not speak understand or learn one sentence in the dutch language and that I 1 felt decidedly helpless whenever I 1 went to holland the remark followed the tallest englishwoman leaned across the table eagerly oh she said but dont people speak dutch in new york |
