Show National News Summary The Draft A pool of more than 2,000,000 young men is now available for drafting into the armed forces of the nation. These are the non-veteran, non-veteran, single men between 19 and 25 who signed up for the draft between August 30 and September 18. Registration of all men 18 through 25 totaled 8,584,963, but the big majority of them are ineligible for military service. Forgery-Proof Permits The Commerce Department has put into use an "entirely new type of export license" made of "a unique forgery-proof paper," as a safeguard against counterfeiting. counter-feiting. The use of the new paper pa-per along with specially designed design-ed machines for making out licenses, li-censes, is expected to provide "a considerable measure of insurance in-surance against illicit dealings in forged and duplicated licenses." "Fun Courses The VA's crackdown on GI "fun" courses has held up three-fifths three-fifths of the recent applications for flight training and one-third of those for photography most of the delay being caused because be-cause not enough information was submitted. New Helicopter The Air Force has ordered a helicopter with a fuselage as big as a 44-passenger transport plane. In addition to its large fuselage, the helicopter will be designed to carry a capsule on its underside for extra passengers passen-gers or cargo. To be known as the XH-16. the helicopter will be about the size of a C-54 or DC-4, and will be all-metal, with a rotor at each end of the body. Meat Prices While there has been some slight decline in the price of meat recently, the Agriculture Department says that consumers can expect little relief in meat prices unless they cut down on meat-buying. It predicts the 1949 supply will be between 140 and 145 pounds per person as compared com-pared with 145 pounds this year. 155 in 1947 and an average of 134 in 1937-41.
