Relinquishes Famed Fortress Almost unnoticed by most Americans, the Stars and Stripes have been lowered on Corregi-dor Corregi-dor and the once-mighty fortress in Manila Bay has been turned over to the Philippine Republic. The ceremony emphasizes the wilHnenpss of the United States. which won the islands from Spain, to deliver them to the people of the Philippines and to give up, without profit and after considerable financial loss, the rich lands of the Philippine Islands Is-lands to the people who now enjoy independence. It is not often that a great nation, after acquiring territory as a result of warfare, voluntarily voluntar-ily withdraws and leaves the area ar-ea to the Dossession of native in habitants. Not only did the United Unit-ed States take possession of the Islands from Spain, but, in the years of American occupation, this country has spent millions of dollars for the benefit of the Filipino people.
