Bracken Lee Lone Survivor Of Republican Ticket Runs 26,844 Ahead Holding true to pre-election polls, J. Bracken Lee, Republican, Republi-can, former Price mayor, and GOP candidate for governor 4 years ago, received the ovation of Utah voters Tuesday in his return appearance against Governor Gov-ernor Herbert B. Maw. A pre-election favorite. Mr. Lee was swept into the governorship gover-norship by a resounding 26,844 majority over Governor Maw. The governor-elect was tfie.only Republican elected to "J&taf e "office "of-fice in Utah, and one ofthe very few in the nation. "',. The major factors in th't defeat de-feat of Governor Maw in an overall Democratic election are seen as the findings of the recent grand jury investigations which1 involved the. stale liquor commission com-mission and a campaign which went well beyond the limits of ordinary political mud slinging, The overwhelming vote is also indicated as more than protest against the Maw administration. Observers believe that a number num-ber of Utah Democrats favor the liberalism of Mr. Lee over the expensive free-lancing of Governor Maw. Upon taking office Governor- elect Lee will find himself in a position comparable to that of George H. Dern during his second term. Dern, a Democrat, had a Republican legislature. Now Lee, a Republican, must face a strong Democratic legislature. legis-lature. But unlike Dern, Mr. Lee also has a Democratic secretary of state who, in Utah, is the lieutenant governor. In the election Mr. Lee carried every county in the state except five. These were Daggett, San Pete, Uintah, Wasatch and Wayne. But the total lead in all five counties for Governor Maw was only 89 votes. Of this number num-ber Uintah county accounted for 41, the biggest majority in any of the five Maw counties. |
