Show School Doings j ROOSEVELT HIGH The Carnival Dance, scheduled for May 14 at the Roosevelt Elementary Ele-mentary gym, promises something some-thing new in the way of entertainment. enter-tainment. Dancing will be the main attraction of the evening, with an array of sideshows lining lin-ing the edge of the floor. Featured Fea-tured will be a fish-pond, fortune telling, and games for young and old.. Sponsored by the year-book staff, the dance is being given as a fund-raising scheme, and the general public is urged to participate in the fun. The Roosevelt track team r- made an excellent showing in competition with nine other schools at the district track meet at Huntington on May 7. Jay Horrocks placed 6th in the 440 yd. dash; Earl McKenna, 3rd and Joe Gleaton 4th, in the high jump; Harold Loranger, 3rd and Gordon Benson, 4th, in the pole vault; Howard Galloway, 3rd in the low hurdles, and Ronald Ron-ald Dye, 5th in the 880 yd. dash. Ronald Duncan, Ray Brod-rick, Brod-rick, Rulon Liddell and Howard Galloway ran the 880 yd. relay, placing 3rd for Roosevelt; while Joe Gleaton, Gordon Benson, Don Snyder and Jay Horrocks came in 3rd in the mile relay. Jack Alexander, Keith Luke and Jack McLea participated in the tennis competition, but did not place. In the first interscholastic baseball game of the season, Roosevelt trimmed Duchesne by a score of 5 to 4. Much credit goes to Joe Gleaton for his masterful mas-terful pitching. In a return game with Duchesne, played at Duchesne, Du-chesne, Wednesday, May 12, the score was 9 to 6 in Roosevelt s favor. Roosevelt will play Altamont at Altamont on Friday. ALTERRA HIGH Clyde Johnson, Alterra's musical mu-sical instructor, accompanied his pupils to Vernal, April 30 and May 1, where they won nine I ratings out of 12 musical events entered at the musical festival. Solo numbers were as follows: fol-lows: soprano, Carol McConkie, 1-- oboe, Joyce Haslem, 1; clarinet, clari-net, Wilma Gilstrap, 1-; Delia Mae Arnold, II; trumpet, Janet Gilslray, 1-; piano, Shirley Hu-ber, Hu-ber, 1; sax, Delsa Durfee, 1-. The mixed chorus rated II; girls chorus, 1-; double trio, 1-; band concert, 1-; and the band marchin, II. , . At the annual Uintah Basin Activity day held April 22 and 23 at Duchesne High school, Max Holfeltz, popular and outstanding outstand-ing track star, garnered a total of 17 Va points, placing 1st in the broadjump; 2nd in the 120 yd. hurdle and 3rd in the 220 yd. low hurdle. Garth Ross ran the mile in 0' 17" and Ncal Domgaard placed 3rd. Lynn Haslem placed 1st in the 880 yd. dash with a time record of 2;20.3, Byron Horrocks won 1st place in the 440 yd. dash lnl;62 2; Dale Patterson placed 4th. Tommy Hacking hurled the discus 122 8" to garner 1st place, and placed 5th In tho shot put and javelin throws. Wade Curry placed 3rd In the pole vault and 5th in the 220 yd. low hurdle. Other important scorers were: Happy Day, 2nd place in javelin; Ray Wardle, 4th In high jump; and Gale Rasmiissen, 3rd in shot put. Aletrra's track team won 5 first places and scored a total i of 84 points. I Alterra is one of the smallest schools in Region 5 and was defeated de-feated only by Uintah High school, with a margin of 21 points. The girls' athletic division sponsored some entries at the track meet with very encouraging encourag-ing results. The shuttle relay, consisting of 8 girls, was run in 57 seconds. This record is .4 seconds faster than the B Y U record at the Invitational Meet. The soft ball team was victorious over Altamont with a score of 11-6. Peggy Day placed 2nd in a free-for-all 60 yd. dash. I In the Commercial events, La-Var La-Var Sprouse and Isola Morrill received "excellent" ratings in 1st year type. Peggy Day and Barbara Russon were rated "good." Tess Goodrich, outstanding outstand-ing 2nd year student, was rated "superior," winning 1st place in this event. Shirley Huber scored an "excellent." Tabulations proved just as outstanding in "music competition. competi-tion. The girls' double trio re-received re-received a "one" rating; the all-girls' all-girls' glee club a "one-minus." Carol McConkie achieved a "one minus" for her vocal solo and the band placed 2nd in the region with a 'one" rating. Alterra received the only "superior" in orations, won by Devon Seeley, a freshman. Ona Bartlett, in extemporaneous speaking, and Joyce Bingham, in dramatic readings, received "excellent" ratings. 'Alterra sent sgrne of her outstanding out-standing tra.ck members to compete com-pete in the events offered at the Provo track meet on April 24, Garth Ross ran the mile in 4:54.1, Although Garth placed secpnd, he practically tagged the winner over the goal line. Tommy Tom-my Hacking placed second in the discus throw with a distance dis-tance of 134 feet which was exactly 11 inches under the 1st place winner. Max Holfeltz placed 4th in the title of "Ail-Around "Ail-Around Champion." |
