Show New Foundation Looks To Nation's Resources Animal life in all its forms, i j forests and other plant life, water wa-ter sources and fertile soils all are being destroyed at a faster rate than they are being replaced. re-placed. This is the warning of the newly new-ly formed Conservation Foundation Foun-dation which will campaign to halt this rapid destruction of the vast natural resources of the nation. na-tion. - The Foundation is sponsored by the New York Zoological Society. So-ciety. Fairfield Osborn, President Presi-dent . of the Society, also heads the new organization, ciety, Fairfield Osborn, Presi The Foundation will carry on large-scale projects and also assist as-sist other institutions working in the field. "For over 50 years the Zoological Zoo-logical Society has been active in the cause of conservation, particularly par-ticularly as it applies to wildlife protection," Mr. Osborn declared in a press conference. "We now, through the Conservation Conser-vation Foundation, intend to go into battle and it is a battle on the entire conservation i front." Mr. Osborn made a brief recapitulation re-capitulation of the status of the nation's natural resources as follows: fol-lows: 1. Of a total of 460,000,000 acres of cultivable land, not more than 15 per cent has been organized or-ganized under the soil-conservation program. 2. Fifty per cent more timber is cut than is being grown. In the past 38 years, the total "wood pile" has been reduced by 40 per cent. 3. Widespread soil erosion has resulted in destruction of aquatic aqua-tic life. 4. Underground water resources re-sources are dwindling in many areas. 5. The animal life situation is "moderately hopeful" because of the tremendous amount of attention atten-tion paid to it over the past few decades. Specific projects proposed by the new Foundation include a survey with the cooperation of the United Nations of the instance in-stance of soil erosion throughout the world. Other studies include a survey of underground water problems and the status of conservation con-servation education in schools. The Foundation already has cooperated in the making of four motion pictures on soil erosion. Four more will be produced this year on conservation subjects. The Foundation President emphasized, em-phasized, however, that the nation na-tion today is spending less than 1 per cent of its annual budget for conservation of its essential resources. |
