Show Cancer Fund Drive Gets Underway; Objectives Listed THE local drive to raise funds for cancer research and control got underway today under the leadership of Mrs. R, V. Larsen, Roosevelt captain for the cancer fund drive. Utah's quota for 1948 has been set at $50,000. Of this amount 60 per cent will be retained within the state for care of cancer patients and for educational purposes. The remaining re-maining 40 per cent will be remitted re-mitted to the national association for research and educational activities. ac-tivities. In Utah a free cancer detection detec-tion center is now established at Salt Lake City, where service is available to anyone who suspects sus-pects the presence of cancer, Mrs. Larsen disclosed Wednesday. Wednes-day. Cancer detection centers are not designed for cancer patients; but for apparently well persons. Their primary objectives are to detect, sooner than would otherwise other-wise be discovered, early cancer or areas of chronic irritation which might lead to cancer. The centers give no treatment nor do they undertake special dia-nostic dia-nostic procedures. Their function func-tion is to provide a thorough physical examination with special spe-cial emphasis on conditions which might lead to cancer. 1 ONE of the objectives of the local leaders who are heading the current drive for funds, is the establishment of a cancer detection center in Roosevelt. The possibility of actually showing a profit on the drive within Utah, in addition to the invaluable services rendered in fighting cancer and aiding cancer can-cer victims, was made possible recently through a grant of $40,-625 $40,-625 for research by the American Ameri-can cancer society to the University Uni-versity of Utah. Community chairmen who will direct the fund campaign in the Roosevelt district are: Roosevelt, Mrs, Clair Larsen; Myton My-ton and Arcadia, Mrs. Emma Smuin; Upalco, Mrs. Rose Rogers; Rog-ers; Mt. Emmons, Mrs. Ina Mecham. |
