Show EARLY MORNING FIRE RAZES TWO ROOSEVELT MERCANTILE ESTABLISHMENTS Roosevelt Volunteer Fire Department Given High Praise For Splendid Work Cause of Fire At This Late Hour is Unknown Starts In Rear of Safeway Store Citizens of Roosevelt were awakened in the early hours Sunday morning, January . 7 by the blasts of the fire siren and within a short time several hundred hun-dred citizens, including the volunteer vol-unteer fire department crew, were at work distinguishing the blaze, which for awhile, looked like it would be impossible to save the buildings on main street which were occupied by Safeway's and Costuros 5c and 10c store. Fire Department Highly Praised Good .management and hard work by the fire department saved both buildings from being completely destroyed and possibly pos-sibly the entire main street section. sec-tion. Fire Damage Estimated The fire started in the rear-end rear-end of the Safeway Store and completely destroyed the back end of the building used as a store room. It burned through the south wall and destroyed the 1 entire rear end of Costuros 5c ' and 10c store, part of which was used as a living quarter by the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Costuros, and the balance as a store room. The damage estimated to buildings build-ings and loss of stock either completely com-pletely burnt or by water and smoke according to appraisers and property owners amounted to $12,000 for buildings and 50 loss on all stocks. Re-construction of both buildings build-ings will be started immediately and fire sales will be held to move stocks so work can be undertaken un-dertaken without undue delay. Labor and material shortage will play a part in the time when the two stores will be back in full operation. |
