EGGS FOUND TO HAVE AFFINITY FOR FRUIT WHEN SHIPPED TOGETHER Several shipment! of eggs con-- , signed to Great Britlan during the past few weeks have been found to be tainted as a result of having been stored too near shipments of fruit, according to information re-ceived by the Salt Lake office of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, from the American com-mercial attache's office in London. A number of instances of the tainting of eggs from being stored near other commodities, particular-ly citrus fruits, have been noted in this country, it. is stated by the poultry division of the Department of Agriculture. In some refrigerat- - ing houses the result was noted where the eggs were in rooms sep-arate from those of the other in which the same air circulated. The odor of citrus fruits and apples has leen found to penetrate the shell, and is taken up by the yolk of the egg, which ap-parently has an affinity for such odors, rtmost care, it is stated, should be used tn storing eggs to avert danger of such foreign odors. Eggs wifh the unusual odor are not actually spoiled, it is explained, but create suspicion in the minds of purchasers because they have a smell 'and taste unlike fresh egg j |
