Show Vikes Fall One Game Short of Consolation By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports VIEWMONT To be honest at the start of the tournament the Viewmont team and coaches were just happy to be there. As the event continued though they changed their tune and wanted to get into the consolation finals. THE VIKES accomplished the first fete by playing in three state games but they missed the consolation finals by one game. Not a bad effort for a very young team, only one senior will be missing next year when the Vikes will be back looking for more than just showing up. Opening night found the Vikes up against region champion Alta and if it weren't for a disastrous third period the young Vikes might have taken the Hawks. As it turned out though the Vikings only managed four points during the third quarter and from that point on the Alta team breezed to a 58-47 victory. VIEWMONT did show some grit and determination deter-mination in the fourth period as they continued to battle back and actually outscored Alta 18-12 18-12 in that period but by then the damage had been done. Juniors Jenny Miller and Heidi Husbands led the local side in scoring as they poured in 18 and 1 1 respectively. The Hawks went on in the tournament and lost only one game in claiming third place so the Vikes didn't lost to just anyone. any-one. Alta was a fine team much like Viewmont will be next season. ON THE SECOND round the Vikes were sent up against a good Olympus squad but this time the Vikings were ready. "Maybe in our first game the girls were a little nervous about being at state and everything, but they were ready in that second game" noted coach Vi Hillman. Ready probably isn't the word the Olympus people would use, ambush would be more like it. Playing one of their best quarters of the season the Vikings jumped all over the Titans and built up a 23-10 lead after one. From this point on the game was played on about even terms but the Vikes were never really threatened. ONCE AGAIN junior Heidi Husbands was one of the top scorers for the local side as she finished with 18 points. In this outing the Viewmont View-mont side got some balanced scoring as both Denise Draper (12) and Jenny Miller (10) were in double digits. That win sent the hometown folks up against Hillcrest, the defending state champions, on Friday with the winner advancing to the con-. con-. solation championship game. This time around it was their opponents that struck early and never looked back as the Huskies built up a 17-12 lead after one period and the Vikes just couldn't catch them. ONE ASPECT that didn't help the Vikes comeback was the fact they missed ten foul shots, which would have brought them back into the battle. However the Huskies were just as cold from the line. see VIEWMONT next pg. Viewmont... continued rrompg.1 and Angel Skedros back the fit: bright. Heidi Husbands finished up a great tournament tourna-ment by pouring in 17 more points, she averaged aver-aged just over 15 points a game for the three state contests, while sophomore Angel Skedros Sked-ros added 9. ALTHOUGH A little disappointed by not getting into the action on the final day the Vikes have little to hang their heads about. They are a young team and they gained some valuable experience at the state event. They lose a fine player in Melinda Davis, the lone senior, but with Husbands, Jenny Miller, Beckv Duncan.
