Show STO A N P W NU P n HOW WELCOME ROBIN NEARLY LOST HIS LIFE welcome robin said that WHEN lie he had nearly lost his life on the long journey from the sunny southland back to the green meadows and the green forest and the old orchard peter rabbit was at once all ears and attention that sounded like an exciting story and peter loves stories as well as anyone I 1 know welcome robin looked down at peter and saw the eager ness in peters face and ne he just refuse when peter begged to be told about it you see it was this way he began when we birds make the long journey we sometimes have to cross great bodies of watery water As big as the smiling pool interrupted peter did you ever see a drop of water peter just a single little raindrop asked welcome R robin obin of course thousands of em why returned peter well replied welcome gravely beside some of those bodies of water we cross the smiling pool would look just about as big as one of those raindrops does beside the smiling pool why As I 1 was saying we birds sometimes have to cross great bodies of the first thing I 1 knew I 1 hit that tower with the tip of one wing water near the shores of some of these men have built queer houses with tall towers and in the tops of these they keep very bright lights at night when you get close to them those lights are as bright as the sun I 1 dont know what they are for sometimes I 1 wonder it if they are put there just to kill us birds you know you never can tell what men will do welcome robin paused with a very faraway look in his eyes as if he were trying to understand what those lights might mean of course he know that they were lighthouses to warn ships of dangerous places he was silent I 1 for or so long that peter grew impatient 1 I dont see said he how lights could possibly hurt you I 1 should think that they would help you have you ever looked straight in the face of jolly bright mr sun asked welcome peter nodded ive tried it more than once said he but ill never do it again why for a few min minutes after I 1 see a thing 11 it is just the same wai way 1 wi with those thos e bright ligh lights ts at night i replied r e p I 1 aed welcome robin on my way up here a lot of us were flying together one dark foggy night and started to cross one of those bodies of water it was so foggy that we be sure whether we were on the right air path or not then we saw one of those lights and because it was so foggy the light very bright it had a queer way of winking it would go out and then it would shine again it was right in our path As we wa got nearer to it it grew brighter but still too bright we were flying very fast and a minute before we reached it it winked out and everything ery thing was dark then it flashed out again right in our faces it was dreadful we see a thing at least I 1 all we could do was to keep flying we see the tower it was in at all and know which way to turn the first thing I 1 knew I 1 hit that tower with wit the tip of one wing it broke the feathers a little that was all but it gave me such a fright that I 1 haven it gota got over ve r it yet if I 1 had flown or straight stra g lit into I 1 n t 0 it I 1 would have b broken ken my neck k some of those wi with th m me e did A great many birds do every year 00 my that was a narrow es e capel exclaimed P peter ter im glad you hit it so 0 am I 1 L replied welcome rob in you ought to be thankful peter that you dont have any greater dangers than you have to watch out for I 1 dont like to think of what might have happened so lets talk of something else cheer cupl up I 1 cheer api upi up cheer cupl cheer |
