Show STOCKMEN COOPERATE IN PROGRAM stockmen Stoc kmen n of the eleven western states who c cooperated with the department of the interior in rc re seeding acres of range land last year are ent enair ing with enthusiasm into the war pro oro gram for re seeding more than one million acres of federal grazing lands in 1942 19 B the office of land utilization re ported today to secretary of the interior harold L ickes As evidence ol of their interest in assuring the success of the huge rt seeding program a iare number of the stockmen stoc kmen using public grazing lands have indicated they will help offset any shortage of man power by using their own equipment and labor to do the job ranch owners and operators most ut tf whom are using federal grazing lanis from 6 to 7 months of the year are determined ter mined to boost supplies of meat I 1 wool mohair and other byproducts by products of 0 the livestock industry as a part of their thai contribution to the nations war effort they can call do this without damage to the land by the application ot of good range management practices supplemented ted by which will be reflected in better calf and lamb crops and increased quality and weight of livestock while field stations of the department of the interior now have large quantities of seed for use in 1942 steps are being taken in many localities to safeguard against any shortage lof of 8 seed e e d supplies that may occur an all example of this foresight is illustrated by an ingenious plan of cooperative effort put into effect with a large part of the more than federal range users of wyoming by the grazing service since practically all of the live livestock operators in wyoming have irrigated iri gated areas area on 01 their ranches the grazing service furi dished 10 to 20 pounds of f seed of the most important adapted species which were planted by the ranchers in seed plots As a result each stockman will alow at least a part of the seed that will be required for a continuing program of re seeding on the public land which he uses it is pointed out that seed produced in the local seed plots will assure the production of a supply of grass seed of species that are thoroughly acclimate dand native to the areas where they will be plan tile de another important factor also is that in dry years ahen hen seed production an range lands might be small the irrigated plots will furnish seed that would not otherwise be available wyoming ranchers not only will grow a part of their own seed supply but will continue a practice started in 1911 1941 of furnishing part of the labor for re seeding work done on public grazing lands in their state the office of land utilization has recommended mended that all field stations of the land management agencies of the department of the interior adopt the wyo wyoming g seed plot pIot plan into their own operations by carrying out such a program of seed production in all the western states it is believed that slackening of the operations because of shortage of seed can be completely forestalled 0 |
