He had to carry a glass of jelly to a sick old lady, so he lets me take you home. Whats the matter with him anyway? Doesnt he know we were engaged once? Didnt he see anything tonight? He lets me take you home. Look here, Caroline, are you going through life with a solution of dish water disguised as a minister? Are you, Caroline Darling? His dark face came closer, closer. Caroline drew back, murmured through a spasm of partial suffocation: Toby! Dont! She tried to Calm herself, to talk with something like composure. I suppose he thought we were to be trusted, Toby. I suppose he Hes too good for this world, Toby said briefly; contemptuously. Doubtfully and reluctantly, she consulted her sister the next day. They were arranging their mothers living room for the junior charity bridge .club. ' I know Im not in love with Toby, Gwen. When Im in a sensible mood I keep telling myself that Toby Condor could drive any woman crazy. I havent any illusions about him. But I dont know. Theres something Toby has that I miss in Warren. Warrens so calm. Oh, its exasperating. You cant know what I mean, Gwen. Warren never loses his temper. Never And you like volcanoes, her sister said. Perhaps youd better take Toby, Caroline. Carolines bridge club came and went. And with the soft spring dusk a wispy summer rain came and danced daintily upon the windows. While Caroline was sitting in the fire-l- it half darkness of the living room, the phone rang again. She answered it and heard, with a happy tightening of her throat, the voice of the Reverend Warren Hollis. Caroline, (she could almost see his serious, spectacled young face while she listened to his slow voice,) I just noticed that its raining. Be sure and wear your rubbers tonight. Caroline laughed. ' She . would wear her rubbers. Would he come to' supper? No, he couldn't. Some Sunday School boys had spilled , ink all over his books, the Reverend Warren' said cheerfully; he must clean up the mess. For goodness sake! cried Carodont you ever line, exasperated, get mad? She put down the phone and smiled into the darkness. What did she care if he didnt! She loved him. Caroline! It was her fathers voice with a strange urgency in it that brought Caroline blinking into the brightly lighted hall. What is it? she asked breathlessly, sensing something she could good-humor- ed , not define. Caroline, did you know that Toby Condor is in the hospital? Toby! Dad, he didnt try to to kill himself? she asked, trembling. He didnt, did he, Dad?, Kill himself? He eyed her keenNo. He isnt badly hurt. Had ly. his face pretty well smashed and lost two teeth; thats all. The front hall dipped and reeled. Her fathers head swam around in a green mixture full of the front stairs and the picture frames as well as the paternal head. Who? she asked. Why? The Reverend Warren Hollis did it, he said. And we want to know why. His housekeeper says that he called our number this morning and asked for you. He listened to you for a few minutes, her father continued impressively, without saying much, if anything. After which, he dashed from the house and committed this assault upon Toby Condor. Warren phoned me this morning, she muttered over a thudding chest; with dawning understanding. Therell be trouble over this Caroline, the man said heavily. she whispered Oh, its awful, seriously. But a strange, not entirely appropriate joy was seeping through her. Gold Mines of Australia Are Important Resources No other single factor has played so important a part in the industrial upbuilding of Australia as her gold mines. Gold drew immigrants to the country; led to a more extensive exploration; established a home market and led to civilization. Gold was officially reported as early as 1823, yet the gold fever struck the country only in 1851. New South Wales was the scene of the first activity, but within a year there was a rush to the Ballarat district of Victoria, and seven years later to the Canoona district of Queensland. Vaccination of susceptible animals with suitable immunizing agents is the second method listed for the control and prevention of animal diseases. The object of such practice is to raise the resistance of susceptible animals to such a degree that exposure to the disease for which the vaccination is made Cholera in will have no effect. swine, black leg in cattle, distemper in dogs and sleeping sickness in horses are diseases that are controlled by vaccination. Immunizing horses against sleeping sickness is one of the newer developments in the field of vaccination and offers considerable promise as a specific preventive for this malady. The third measure for the control and prevention of live stock diseases was listed as improved methods of live stock management with various state colleges of agriculture serving as a constant source of information on improved methods. Such information is often of real value since a change in feeding practices or a change in management with respect to care of both young and mature stock may greatly reduce the incidence of certain diseases, it was explained.. Pregnancy disease of ewes and acetonemia in cows are examples of diseases that are now largely preventable by the application of information that has accumulated relative to the nature of these disorders. When disease does appear in spite of approved management practices, live stock owners are advised to seek the services of competent veterinarians without delay. Report Shows Shift From Farm to City f Some of the reasons why this country has changed from a nation of farmers to a nation of city workers are given in the annual report of the Administrator, Agricultural Adjustment administration. The report points out that as late as 1870 more than half of the gainfully employed persons in the United States were in agriculture, but that by 1930 the proportion had fallen to a little over a fifth. This change, says the report, was due to a variety of causes, underlying all of which have been advances in technology and invention. Such advances have almost invariably displaced farm labor and created industrial employment in the cities. Other causes listed include expansion of commercial and distributive services, as manufacturing and processing took precedence over cultivation of crops. The report calls attention to the development of a division of labor in which farmers concentrated on raising foodstuffs and fibers while the city workers took over many of the other tasks formerly performed Another on farms. cause of the shift noted in the report has been the increase in transportation, communication, and governmental services which have become progressively more necessary with the growth of cities. Rubber tires on tractors have made from 20 to 25 per cent more horse power available at the drawbar. In addition, there is a saving of from 14 to 17 per cent in fuel. Dont Neglect Them!
