The chicken is primarily an bird, not a "hot house plant. Yet in bad weather, birds need some protection against cold, rain, and drafts. Many poultrymen have a tendency to confine their birds more than necessary. On warm, sunshiny days give the birds, especially the young chicks, a chance to range outside. Exercise in the sunshine will help develop vigorous birds. But the ranges should be clean. It is better to keep chicks inside a clean house than to turn them out on a dirty range. Poultrymen who buy their chicks will find it pays in the long run to buy only good quality chicks from reliable sources. State d chicks from the near vicinity are . , usually best. Dont overcrowd chicks or growing birds. Give them plenty of fresh air without exposing them to drafts. But dont overheat them, either, for this will lower their vitality. It is also a good idea to watch laying birds carefully. In the season of heavy laying they are sensitive to changes in feed and management. To prolong production in the spring, start feeding a wet mash at the first sign of a slump. Give the mash early in the afternoon, placing it in troughs in such quantities as the birds will readily clean up in 20 to 30 minutes. out-of-do- or . blood-teste- Bees Find Nectar Supply Varies as to Localities Local conditions, soils, and climate seem to influence the nectar supply of plants from which bees gather their raw material. Science has not solved nearly all the problems raised by the bees in their search for honey material. W. J. Nolan, bee specialist in the United States Department of Agriculture, notes that alfalfa is a good nectar producer in the area west of the Mississippi river, but is of slight importance to the east. Buckwheat honey is well known for its dark color and characteristic flavor but nearly all of it comes from a relatively small area near Lakes Erie and Ontario ; elsewhere in this country buckwheat is a honey plant of only slight importance. White clover is widely grown and is a s honey source, but in certain localities it gives the honey bee little or no nectar. first-clas- The Boys Were Doubtful Till Story Was Verified If Dizzy returns to great pitching form he will deserve the title of "$250,000 beauty. Phil K. Wrigley "When I was in Montana, said the old bore, in the smoking room, "I had an interesting experience. One morning, as I was shaving, a fierce lion came into camp. I seized a pan of water and threw it at the beast, and it slunk miserably away. There was dead silence for a moment, then a little chap in the corner chimed in. "Say, boys, he said, "I can vouch for that story. Five minutes after it happened I was walking along- the same road. I met this lion, and I stopped to stroke his whiskers. Boy, those whiskers were wet. y; - New Beauty for the Home wax for the house- Self-polishi- ng hold v is practical protective and popular! Although Doubledays diamond has remained to this day, he did not perfectly devise rules at the same time. The first set of rules was formulated and played under by the Knickerbockers of New York City who were the first team to wear uniforms. They began to play regularly in 1842, and a few years later appeared on the field in blue trousers and white shirts. In the early days there were eleven players to the side, including two shortstops and two second base-meThey didnt have innings in the old days. The first team to score 21 runs won the game and the batter could keep chasing around the bases and score as many as two or three runs on one hit until the ball was found. The first extra inning game was played in 1852, the Knickerbockers beating the Gothams 22 to 21. The game was popular during the Civil war and there were hot contests between selected teams of the Union troops and the Confederate army. The games were played on neutral territory and attended by thousands of soldiers. Al. J. Reach was the first ball player to get a salary and the first to he sold from one club to another. Brooklyn sold him to Philadelphia in 1864 for $275. The Cincinnati Reds were the first team to employ all salaried ball players. George Wright, the shortstop, was the star and drew down $1,400. A In recent years many poultrymen have found that local markets are best for both live and dressed poulUnless cows have an abundance of pure water to which they can go at any time, milk flow will be affected. Jerome "Dizzy Dean will be called the David Harum of baseball and Cub fans can start ordering their worlds series tickets. If Dizzy causes Charley Grimm no jitters, if he settles down to business, if he pitches for the best interests of the team, if he gets along well with his teammates and his employers, then Chicago will have cause for rejoicing. The Cubs have acquired a great, but eccentric pitcher, a baseball personality more colorful than anything since Babe Ruth and a box office attraction of first magnitude But at best he is hard to handle. Some authorities have viewed the deal with skepticism, for Branch Rickey and Sam Breadon are noted for their canniness. On the other hand, the Cub record on trades in the last five or six years has been one headache after another. The Dean trade may break the jinx. Only one of those deals was really satisfactory and in the process the Cubs tossed about a million dollars in cash and players around the league. That was the trade that brought Tex Carleton, at present top pitcher on the staff to the Cubs from St. Louis in the off season of 1934 in return for Pitchers Bud Tinning, Dick Ward and a bundle of cash. Worst bust of all was the Chuck Klein deal. The Cubs laid out $125,-00- 0 plus three players to the Phillies for the National leagues then prize slugger. His cleanup attempts were pathetic and three years later a disillusioned management traded him back to the Phillies along with Pitcher Fabian Kowalik and cash for Curt Davis and Ethan Allen. Allen was of little use and went to the St. Louis Browns. Davis developed brittle tendencies that kept him out of action and made him an Protecting the Waterfowl Grazing by cattle and other domestic animals destroys waterfowl food and cover and frequently causes the loss of eggs due to trampling. On areas frequented by large numbers of waterfowl, grazing should be confined by fencing to protect the best nesting cover, says Successful Farming. Small grains like barley, oats, or wheat should be broadcast on waste lands where practical. Such grains, relished by game birds, augment available food supplies and tend to hold game on the farm. ,1, Aids Box Office self-polishi- ng Non-slipper- ' 1 Loi Angeleo, Lua Vegaa, Salt Idaho Falla, Pocatello Butte, Helena, Great Falla |
