NARRATOR: The condition of the Nephites became so shameful that a message of prophecy was given to- a humble Lamanite to carry to the people who should have of themselves possessed it. Indeed, Samuel, the La-- ' manite prophet gained admittance to Zara hernia, a Nephite city, but as befalls many servants of God he was cast out. Is it not strange that so highly an intelligent race would not see that It is impossible to ward oft the judgments of the Creator with mere force against his servants? Moreover, Samuel would not he warded off, and mounting the wall of the disgraceful city he gave in powerful accents the prophecy that at the end of five years the Savior would be born in the distant Elast. The signs attending His coming to earth would influence this hemisphere. During the night before His birth there should be no darkness the sun should go down at its appointed hour as always it had, but the heaviness of night should this once, be withheld. The event would be marked by the apiearance of a new star and others wonders in the heavens. Concerning the time apjiointed foi the Saviors crucifixion Samuel prophe cied: Behold, in that day that Hp shall suffer death, the sun shall be darkened and refuse to give his light to you; and also the moon and the stars: and there shall be no light up on the face of this land, even from the' time that He shall suffer death for the space of three dhys, to the time that He shall rise again from the dead. There shall be thunderings and lightening for the space of manv hours, and the earth shall shake and tremlble. and the rocks shall, be rent in twain and shall ever after bej&yiitff in seams and in cracks and in broken fragments upon the face of the whole earth. There shall be great. .tenipests and there shall be many mountains laid low. like unto a valley and there shall be many places which are now called valleys which shall become mountains whose height is very great. And many highways shall be broken up, and manv cities shall become desolate. And many graves shall be onenr ed and shall yield up many of their dead, and manv saints shall appear onto many Many shall see greater things than these to the intent that there should be no cause of unbelief among the children of men. As the time drew near when the signs of Saviors birth should be shown, many of the wear-leof the wait. Unbelievers used this occasion, to sow discord among brethren. They falsely declared that even now the time was surely past when the signs should have appeared. So bitter were the sentiments of the unbelievers that they actually appoint-ea day upon which if the signs werp not shown, all believers should he put to death. Faithfully the Christians watched and prayed. Nephi. the son of the great prophet after whom he was called poured out the sufferings of his people to his God. All day he offered his soulful supplication that comfort be sent to his imperiled people. Then with unmistakable assurance came these words to his consciousness : Lift up your head and be of good cheer, for behold, the time is at hand and on this night shall the sign be given, and on the morrow come I into the world, to show unto the world that I will fulfill all that which I have caused to be spoken by the mouth of all my holy prophets. The voice had said: This night shall the sign be given and as is every prophetic utterance, it was fulfilled. At the going down of the sun there was no darkness; all night it was as noon. Even with the rising of the sun in the morning it brought no glories to the day, save the announcement that it was morning. Of a surety the prophet had truly spoken. It was the sign of the birth of the Savior. Confirming as the news must have been to those who had waited for it, there were some whom it found In grief. Those stubl torn souls who had forfeited many rich blessings in their anxiety to persecute Christian believers must now submit to a complete frustration of plans. Many of their own number had been made to acknow ledge by the sureness of the sign the truths that had been prophecied. To the greater part of the people It signified a jessing unparalleled. It seems that with the Christ established upon the earth, Satan recognized the. urge-nneed for action. If he intended to have a pant in directing the destinies of men. surely Be. must marshall his cunning forces with all diabolical diligence.
