Forcing," he declares, should not be attempted 'on young stock, nor should it be expected of them that production on top of early maturity gained from forcing will be the best for flock production. For poultry stock which is In condition to be forced, such as pullets that are well along to maturity, and hens that have fully recovered from their molt and are again in good condition, Increased feeding during the winter months Is a good way to bring np production of the flock. One of the best of rations for the flock to bring them to better production is this one: Scratch Feed Mixture Cracked corn, 2 pounds ; wheat, 2 pounds ; oats, . to require attention. Bumblefoot results In an abscess or corn on the bottom of the fowls foot, usually caused by a jar or bruise received in jumping from a perch that is too high to a hard floor. Occasionally the trouble is caused by sharp corners on the perches or by perches that are too large for the fowls to rest on naturally. One of the best remedies for Is prevention. See that there are no sharp corners on the roosts and that the roosts are as low as they can be placed conveniently, particularly if one of the heavy breeds is being housed. Another Item that is of value in prevention is the matter of keeping a liberal supply of clean litter on the floors. In cases where bumblefoot develops, a few applications of tincture of Iodine will usually effect a cure. If applied at the first signs of foot soreness. bam-blefo- ot Vice Needs Egg-Eatin- g . The trouble may also be prevented by arranging the nests so that the fronts do not face the light By turn-in- g them around, facing them towards the wall, the eggs are hidden from view, and there is less likelihood of any Inquisitive bird locating the eggs. All nest boxes should be arranged so that they are at least a foot from the floor of the house, thus preventing the hens from coming Into direct contact with them. . I 0 . I While the corn grower is, and must be, somewhat of a gambler, he can, right now, put some of the sure thing element on his own side of the game by foresight. With thousands of bushels of soy beans going into storage at this time of the year, J. C. Hackle-man- , University of Illinois, warns that they must contain less than 15 or 16 per cent of moisture to be safe from spoilage. This is the maximum moisture percentage, as determined by research and experience, under which soy beans can be stored with safety. Soy beans that are cut too green or with ttf high a moisture content will go off condition quickly and be cut severely in grade. In addition to moisture content, farmers can control three other factors which determine the grade of soy beans. These are condition and appearance, broken or split beans, and foreign material. As for condition and appearance, soy beans, like corn, should Took good, that Is, be free of mold, have no insect injury and as far as possible be clean and show marketability. They must be cool, a point which is directly correlated with the question of moisture content The percentage of split or broken beans Is likely to mount if there is excessive cylinder speed In threshing, concaves set too close, too many teeth or excessively dry beans. The fourth factor that Is largly under the control of the farmer and thresherman Is the amount of foreign material. S. Cutler, assistant In agronomy, of Ohio State university, have included some direct and important suggestions for storage of seed corn, which. If followed, will go far toward Insuring a good yield next year. It is almost impossible, the specialists point out; to properly store seed corn without a specially constructed rack for this purpose, since no two ears should touch each other while in storage. Such a rack may easily be made by doubling a length of woven wire fencing over .a in such fashion that the wire meshes are directly opposite each is then susother. ' Heartwood of Tree Is Favored for a Post 'The heartwood of a tree makes a more lasting post than the sapwood. This is apparently because the cell walls are comparatively tender and have not yet hardened and become filled with the more solid material. Many assume that the Inactive heartwood in an old tree starts to deteriorate and so the heartwood from an old tree would not last as long as that from a younger tree ; but this does not seem to hold true. Sound heartwood will have practically the same lasting qualities whether from a young or old tree. sap-woo- d Deal Promptly With Kidney Irregularities. .
