But Ive never heard much. Where did you go to school? In West Ha instead, at the district school until I was old enough to go to high school. I teach the district school myself now." And you went to high school Here in Hamstead. I lived with Mummers Aunt Sarah. She was an old lady, a cripple. She was awfully good to me. She let me come and live with her and work for my board and go to school. If she hadnt Id have had to go out as hired help when I was thirteen." Are are your parents dead? Oh, no. But theyve never seemed to prosper. Puppers had hard luck always, and Mummer isnt strong. Anne hesitated a moment, and then continued, in a burst of confidence, Im afraid you wont say anything about loving to bear me talk again, after hearing me call them Mummer and Pupper. But I did when 1 was a little girl, and when I learned that I ought to say Mamma and Papa, they wouldnt let me change. They thought I was trying to put on airs. Did you think of Father and Mother? Yes but they didnt like that either. I see so youve never been away from Hamstead? Well, of course I go to Wallace-towOn errands. And once in a while to a show. Wouldnt you like to go further away than that? Wouldnt I like to? What do you suppose? Well, I suppose you would. So why dont you? Why dont you let me come and take you for a nice long drive up through the mountains in my automobile? Anne was speechless. It was impossible and yet it had happened. For the first time in nearly an hour, she remembered the existence of George. And only because it would be such a satisfaction to tell him that his jeering prediction had come true. Then her heart smote her. George would be hurt, terribly hurt, by the mere knowledge that the Invitation had been extended. If she accepted it, he would be stricken. I could come for you right after breakfast, Neal went on, then we could stop in Wallacetown and pick up Mrs. Griffin and Roy. We could have lunch at some hotel. We could go a long way in a day, youve no Idea. Then Id bring you back in the evening. n. Oh, I cant! Neal flung away his cigarette, and looked at her curiously in the moonlight There was real anguish In her voice. Well, dont take it that way, even if you cant. But why cant you? You have no idea how much work there is for me to do at home. And theres extra washing to do this week. We could go on Sunday. On Sunday? I dont believe you understand our ways. We never go anywhere on Sunday. Well, couldnt you, for once? No even if I thought it was right, to play the organ in church and have I teach my Sunday school class, and Wouldnt somebody else do that for you, just once? , No ohe ever has. Thats no sign no one ever would. You might ask. She tried to shake herself free from the lure of his suggestion. I George wouldnt like it at all if I did. Who is George? I could come twice before Sunday, anyway. Tomorrow evening and Saturday evening. Youre willing I should come to call, arent you?" I Dont Believe You Really Intend to Marry Him, Though, Do You? The only trouble is, I can only stay here a few days. Im on my vacation, but its got to be a pretty short one. Im a lawyer, you know. In Hinsboro. Royll tell you, or your family, anything youd like to know about me. Im doing pretty well quite well But this is the first vacation Ive ever taken, and I cant afford to leave my office too long now. I mustnt take any chances. Ive worked too hard, building up my practice, to let it slide. You see that, dont you? Annes heart had bounded from her fluttering breast to her throat. She could not answer him. Inside the ball, the leader of the band was beginning to call the numbers of the Portland Fancy. Thomas Gray would be hunting for her, and George Wont you please say youll take that drive? It was no use. She could not struggle against her own longing. Somehow she found her voice. All right, she said breathlessly. It was barely more than a whisper, but Neal, hearing it, knew that she would not change her mind. Yes, Ill go. ness, in the end, to let him find that out right away? Perhaps, but Do you know how many times youve said but to me tonight? No but They both laughed. It seemed, somehow, very easy for Anne to laugh with Neal Conrad. And in the course of her laugh she recovered herself somewhat. I may as well tell you. I couldnt possibly go with you to one of those I havent anything to big hotels. wear. She was afraid, then, that he was going to laugh at her instead of with her. But he did nothing of the sort He regarded her with less amusement than before, and something very like tenderness. You dont need to dress up, you know. Havent you a simple little serge suit of some sort? Its cool, motoring. No." And you couldnt get one? No, I couldnt afford to buy one. (TO BE CONTINUED.) Colorado Plan Intended to Improve Quality. law will Colorados new benefit poultry producers of the state by standardizing and improving the quality of eggs sold, says O. C. Ufford, extension poultryman for the Colorado Agricultural college. Improved standards will create a demand for quality eggs, for which producers should be paid accordingly, he adds. At present there is no restriction against selling eggs of any quality, egg-gradi- grade or condition. The dumping of eggs into Colorado from surrounding states, causing sudden breaks in market prices, will be prevented by the new law, which specifies that eggs shipped into the state must be candled and meet at least the quality and grade of Grades to be used unstandards. der the law include Specials," Exand tras, Standards, Trades, low-grad- e Checks. Grocers, dealers and wholesalers, are required to obtain licenses from the office of the director of markets, Denver. It is unlawful to sell inedible eggs. All eggs sold to consumers must be candled and graded. Producers selling eggs direct to consumers must candle aud grade them and may get their licenses free of charge if they are selling only their own eggs. If selling direct to dealers, it is not necessary for producers to candle and grade or have licenses. If a producer buys eggs to sell with his own he must secure a dealers license. Joys, Sorrows, and Remembrances in Journey Down Hills of Yesterday I have just returned from a long journey down the hills of Yesterday. Actuated by a desire to find a picture of the old high school (before it was called Sliortridge), which I knew must be in the old box of letters and reminders of other days, I dragged out the ponderous thing that has been toted from pillar to post, lo, these many years, in spite of the disapproval of the entire family. It contained programs of graduating classes and of all the activities of my young life, but the picture failed to appear. There were old letters dating back to girlhood days, and 1 took the fatal step of reading some of their yellowed pages. Alas I no arguments of hardhearted any cynical onlookers could persuade me to dump the whole outfit into the furnace. Let the dead past bury its dead; What do you want with all that antiquated stuff? and kindred remarks assailed my ears unheeded, as I slipped back into the past There were faded letters written long ago by indulgent parents, brothers and sisters, reciting the homely details of family life; joyfully describing little outings, parties and weddings; sadly speaking of illness and deaths. There they were, from girlhood days down to maturity. I read many of them, dwelling longest upon the days of young motherhood; on letters from little ones just learning to write; about little successes of keeping house in mothers absence; of sweet little confidences so naively expressed; letters embellished with drawings of flowers and people by the little artist ; I have a boy of nine writing thus: to read Silas Mariner and The Mill the Floss. Would that George El- liott (the spelling is his) had used her own name, shed never have been Dickens comes next Which great 1 is the best to read? Of course I mean the shortest and easiest. And so on, letters too sacred to quote, breathing hope and happiness, family history In the making. How could I bear to let the flames of an unfeeling furnace obliterate it all? There' were letters from girl friends full of all sorts of foolishness; the book lovers asking for something good to read. Had I read One Summer, for instance? Yes, Indeed, I have never forgotten that clever little story. I can still see that young lonesome girl starting out in the rain and wind at a little seaside village, in search of a book to read; running into the hero (to be) and almost putting out his eye with her unmanageable umbrella. The pen of Blanche Willis Howard had happily entertained me before with her story of Aunt Serena, centered about the opera of Lohengrin. As I recall it now, it must have been on the order of Susan Ersts Madame Clare. About that time, everybody was reading i Helens Babies, Fools Ero Lowries, RudLady of the AroosA That Lass rand, der Grange," The took, Daisy Miller, and the short stories of Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Harriet Prescott Spofford, and Sarah Orne Jewett For two whole days, my room was a chaos of letters in process of assortment. I walked in the past mechaniducally performing the present-daties until the orgy was over. Then I came back to earth, tied all the letters In bundles according to dates of special significance and put the old box back into the closet and not into the furnace. With so many years behind ufi, It is very difficult to conform to present tactics which admonish us to forget the past and live In today. M. 0. It isnt known whether he herds the animals with dog fish, but, anyway, he obtains about seventy-fivquarts of milk daily. And this milk has proved excellent for butter and cheese. Scientific American. e rat-tra- p Range Best Place for the Health of Pullets The range Is still one of the best places for the growing of sturdy, healthy pullets, In the opinion of Prof. W. C. Thompson, poultry husbandman at the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment station. Fresh air, sunshine, protection from excessive summer heat, green food and working space are essential to the efficient development of good poultry, while overcrowding of the ranges is the most frequent cause of trouble. The desirable conditions can be provided on farms where not more than 300 pullets need be ranged on an acre and rotation of crops practiced. Colony houses for growing pullets should be movable so that they may be shifted at least twice during the season. If the ranges are so managed that they have a green crop growing on them they will probably be in a sanitary condition. Professor Thompson recommends a r rotation plan, in which any given range is used but once during the period for the pullet crop. In the year following the use of the land for birds, some cultivated crop should be grown such as corn, potatoes or cabbage. In the second year, wheat, oats, barley, rye or some other small grain crop can be planted in the early part of the season and after the harvesting alfalfa may be sown. In the third year the alfalfa is managed as a money crop and in the fourth year the poultry ranges over the second year alfalfa growth. four-yea- on He lives on the Are you engaged to him? G Once when a printer was handed a manuscript by Horace Greeley he took one look and cried : Good G d! if Belshazzar had seen this writing on the wall, he would have been more terrified than he was. Thomas Bailey Aldrich, noted American poet and novelist, quoted in the Golden Book Magazine, went into the matter of illegibility even more thoroughly in a letter to Prof. E. S. Morse, naturalist and educator : It was very pleasant to get a letter from you. . . . Perhaps I should have found it pleasanter if I had been able to decipher it. I dont think I have mastered anything beyond the date (which I knew) and the signature (which I guessed at). Theres a singular and perpetual charm in a letter of yours; it never grows old ; it never loses its novelty. One can say to oneself every morning: Theres that letter of Morses. I havent read it yet. I think Ill take another shy at it today. Other letters are read, and thrown away, and forgotten; but yours arq kept forever unread. One of them will last a reasonable man a lifetime. Wisconsin Agriculturist, Why Hospitals Use a Liquid Laxative Hospitals and doctors have always used liquid laxatives. And the public is fast returning to laxatives in liquid form. Do you know the reasons? The dose of a liquid laxative can be measured. The action can be controlled. It forms no habit; you need not take a double dose a day or two later. Nor will a mild liquid laxative irritate the kidneys. The right liquid laxative brings a perfect movement, and there is no discomfort at the time, or after. The wrong cathartic may keep you constipated as long as :you keep on using it I And the habitual use of irritating salts, or of powerful drugs in the highly concentrated form of pills and tablets may prove injurious. A week with a properly prepared liquid laxative like Dr. Caldwells Syrup Pepsin will tell you a lot. A few weeks time, and your bowels can be as regular as clockwork.
