News Notes It PriviUgt to Lino in m GROWING CHICKS REQUIRE PROTEIN . TEST DAIRY COWS FOR PRODUCTION Eliminates Unprofitable Animals From Good Ones. The herd improvement test advances the breed in two ways, said H. W. Norton, speaking at Cornell It gets rid of the university. unprofitable cows, and discovers those animals capable of high production, the real seed stock of the breed. Mr. Norton, who is superintendent of advanced registry for the Holstein-Friesia- n association, says that the herd improvement test meets the requirements of hundreds of breeders who have not felt warranted in undertaking advanced registry testing. Unlike the advanced registry test, Jn which the individual cow is the unit, this test includes the entire herd and is designed to furnish the owner a definite knowledge of the production of each individual member of the herd. It began January 1, 1928, and for the first year 269 herds including 6,318 cows representing 36 states were on test The Improvement test .will also furnish valuable Information regarding sires. Improvement of the breed must be effected largely through the sire; and since heavy production is the chief consideration, it follows that the selection of sires having ability to transmit high production is a matter of the utmost importance, said Mr. Norton. In the past we have selected sires with a long line of dams, but this is not an absolute guarantee that the sire will transmit heavy producing ability to his daughters. The only real proof that a bull possesses this much desired characteristic is the fact that his daughters are heavy producers. Such bulls are commonly called proven sires. To date, we have few of them. Advanced registry testing, as commonly practiced, does not prove the sire, because only the best daughters are tested. Testing all the daughters of a bull Is the real check of his ability to transmit the factor for high production, and this will be one of the outstanding features of the herd improvement test Herds which continue with this test year after year will show the influence of the sire by comparison of the productions of dams and daughters. As a result many valuable sires will be saved for service, and not slaughtered before their real worth is discovered. g, high-produci- Careless Handling of a Bull Always Dangerous Careless handling of a bull is dangerous. Safety demands that the simple' principles of good herdsmanshlp be used, without fail, every day of the year. First, every bull should be dehorned as a calf. Second, every bull should have a strong ring put in his nose when he becomes a yearling. And whenever it Is necessary to handle him, a strong bull staff should be attached to the nose-rinThird, every bull In service should be confined to his exercising pen. Never under any conditions should anyone trust a 'mature animal. Even the bull with the habit of holding his head near the fence to be petted the gentle as a kitten bull should never be trusted. When he displays his skill at butting in an attempt to catch and crush a hand or object, it should not be looked upon as mere playing. Instead it should be looked upon as a warning. , g. Dairy Facts Salt should be added to all grain mixtures in amounts of 1 to 2 per cent by weight Potatoes may be used with success although a heavy allowance of them to a cow.will produce milk of poor flavor. The farmer who has a dry pasture should not hesitate to cut some green corn or sorghum and throw It over to the milk cows. . After the heifers are safe in calf gradually increase the grain ration up to three months before calying and then feed besides alfalfa hay and silage, six to ten pounds of grain a day until a week before calving. Increase In muscle and nerve tissue and the total weight of growing chicks, is largely due to the protein content of the feed ration, said Prof. G. F. Heuser. at the Cornell university at Ithaca, N. Y. Chicks grow rapidly in the beginning. During the first month they have the fastest growth, and after the second month the rate of growth begins to decrease until the time of maturity. Since protein is needed for growth larger amounts should be fed at first, and less as the chicks grow . older. According to Professor Heuser, the experiments at Cornell show that certain amounts of protein are best for chicks at different ages and that feeding more than these amounts will not give greater growth, but that feeding less than these amounts is apt to result in decreased growth. These experiments show that the best amount of protein in the feed for chicks from one to six weeks old is 20 per cent; for chicks of from 6 to 12 weeks, 17 per cent; and for those from 12 to 20 weeks old, 14.5 per . cent Rent Receipts Are a Liability. A Home Like This .Is a Real Asset and Gives You a Standing in Your Community. This Home Was Selected for Its Beautiful and Convenient Floor Layouts. By W. A. RADFORD Mr. William A. Radford will answer questions and give advice FREE OF all subjects pertaining to practical home building, for the read-- , ers of this paper. On account of his wide experience as editor, author and manufacturer, he is, without dcubt, tbe highest authority on all these subjects. Address all Inquiries to William A. Radford, No. 1827 Prairie avenue, Chicago, 111., and only inclose stamp for reply.- Some homes are designed especially for a corner lot, especially if the lot is narrow in its extent on one or the other of the streets. For a lot of this character the colonial home is excellent It may be placed facing either one of the streets because of its design and the end appears to be the front. A design for a colonial home that may be built either on a corner lot or an ordinary lot is shown in the accompanying illustration. As will be seen the sun parlor is built on one end and faces the street. This plan can be reversed if it Is desired. The house Is 22 feet wide by 28 feet long. It contains five rooms besides the sun parlor, bath and a sewing room on the second floor. The sewing room, it will be noted from the floor plans, is large enough for a small bedCOST . oil two-ce- Large amounts of protein feed will not hasten maturity, but enough should be fed so that the best possible growth can be attained at the time of maturity and this will mean larger eggs and better production. Cannibalism Is Serious Habit Among Hen Flock What Is known among poultry raisers of experience as cannibalism among hens is in many cases a really serious proposition. If a hen with nothing else to occupy her gets to pecking at one of her mates and perchance plucks a feather and that feather perchance is a new one and a little blood should appear, another and more vigorous peck is made; this time ,a real wound is made and more blood is brought forth. From this time on this - old hussy becomes a .veritable cannibal. Others of the flock are more than likely to join her in this cannibalism and it takes but a short while for them to actually get their victim down and tear her to pieces. Poultry experts of the Ohio Experiment Station have found that trimming off the point of the under beak just about down to the quick will at once stop the mischievous work of an individual so treated. Sometimes it is but necessary to trim one or two individuals that happen to be leaders in the trouble. nt room. This is a true colonial design both in exterior appearance and the interior arrangement The entrance door , Crooked Breast Bones in Turkeys Avoidable There are two things responsible for t crooked breast bone in turkeys. The first would be faulty breeding, that is, because there is a lack. of the mineral matter of the right sort, because of faulty metabolism of the same. Another reason is faulty roosting places or letting them roost too early, that is, a round roost is more likely to cause a crooked breast bone than a flat one and too small a roost, that is, a Toost that is too small in diameter Is more likely to cause crooked breast bones' than a flat roost. The toms naturally are heavier than the pullets and a round roost or a roost that is too narrow would account for the fact that the toms had crooked breast bones while the pullets had none. Theories to Determine Sex of Little Chicks Many rules and theories have been proposed for determining the sex of the chicks at hatching or even from the egg. To date, most methods have In the Barred proved unreliable. Brooding Chicks UTAH The Western Pacific railroad spent $1,739,766.41 in Utah for operating expenses during 1928. PARK CITY The , intermountain territory produces annually more than $260,000,000 worth of manufactured goods, while the value of minerals' is in excess of $100,000,000. ' SALT LAKE1 The population of the intermountain region is 60 per cent rural, while 40 per Cent of the people live in cities of more than 2500 persons. . CEDAR CITY Because of the cold weather this spring, sheepmen fear the approaching lambing season, as many of the lambs will die unless the weather becomes milder. The same applies to the sheep, as shearing has already begun. One sheepman is reported to have lost about 500 sheep out of his herd of 3000, an unsually large proportion.; JACKSON The stage line between Jackson, Wyo., and Victor, Idaho, the nearest railroad point to this isolated Wyoming town, is experiencing considerable difficulty in making the trip over the 8000-fopass. In view of the fact that six feet of snow lies on the road going over the Teton pass; it is necessary to transfer the mail and freight from truck to wagon and from wagon to sled. ; VERNAL Shearing of range sheep has started at the plant at Jensen, fifteen miles southeast of Vernal, with 16,000 head scheduled to be sheared No at this plant. sales of wool have been recorded from this plant, although several buyers have been in Vernal during the past few days sampling wool. Favorable weather continues to attend the shearing operations in Uintah county. ST. GEORGE Washington county mohair growers received a price of 45 cents and 48 cents for mature hair and 68 cents for kid hair. And two carloads of fleeces left Cedar City recently, consigned to Boston. Local growers two weeks ago refused Offers of 46 cents and 56 cents, and since that time approximately 85,000 pounds of mohair has been stored in Cedar City under guard awaiting final disposition. AIRPORT Under the favorable weather conditions of the last few days, the city, under direction of Harry L. Finch, commissioner of parks, is making a determined drive to complete laying drainage tile on the center runway. In conjunction with this phase of field improvement, graders and levelers are engaged in smoothing off the entire acreage. The object is to make the whole field available for landings and takeoffs. At present, the main runways are cinder surfaced. LOGAN Reuben Hansen, tester of the Wellsville-Colleg- e Ward Dairy Herd Improvement association, has filed his monthly, report with County Agent Robert L. Wrigley. The average milk production per cow during March was 760 pounds, compared with 660 pounds for February. The average butterfat production per cow was 27.91 pounds, compared with 24.50 pounds for the previous period. One hundred and twelve animals gave forty pounds of fat or more during the month. MANTI The blacksmith shop at Mayfield' has been busy the past several days preparing gopher probes. These rather dangerous looking instruments are five or six feet long, inch tubing at one with at the other. a and rake tooth end, The sharp point finds the gopher hole, and the tube is used to deposit a nice little breakfast of ' carrots therein. The mere fact that the carrots carry strychnine ' in quantities deadly to gophers is in keeping with the general appearance of the probe. RICHFIELD Digging through snow from two and lf to twenty feet deep for a distance of four .miles, N. B. Cook, chief deputy state fish and game commissioner, nine deputy wardens and eight men engaged by the Richfield Lions club and the resorts opened the road to Fish lake for the purpose of planting fingerlings and obtaining fish eggs, Cook reported recently on his return. The gang occupied sixteen days in opening the road, digging to earth so that trucks carrying the fingerlings might get to the waters. About thirty-fiv- e truckloads of these fish are going into Fish lake, and the crowded condition of the hatcheries made it necessary to get them planted imediately to make room for those yet to be hatched. BOISE Boise had its first touch of spring recently when the sun re- mained out during the entire day and the therometer mounted to 67, a tem- -' perature equaled only once this year; on April 2. . -- Larger Amounts Given First and Gradually Decreased, is through an outside passage and leads into a narrow hall out of which runs the stairs to the second floor. As arranged according to the plan shown, the living room is at the left and extends the whole width of the house, being 21 feet long and 11 feet 6 inches wide. In the center of the outside wall of this room is set an open fireplace with french doors leading to the sun parlor on either side. The sun parlor is 19 feet long and 7 feet C inches wide and has almost continuous windows, making It a very attrac' tive sunny and airy room. To the .right of the entrance hall through a cased opening is the dining room. This is also large, being 11 feet Second Floor Plan. v by 12 feet 6 inches. At the back is tlie kitchen, 8 feet by 11 feet. The stairs leading to tbe second floor end in a ball at the back off of which open two large bedrooms, sewing room and the bathroom. One of the bedrooms is 11 feet by 15 feet, and the other is 11 feet 6 inches by 14 feet. The sewing room is S feet by 6 feet 6 inches. Off tbe two large bedrooms are closets of large capacity. It will be noted that these bedrooms are corner rooms and are light and airy. The most important consideration in brooding chicks is to keep them always on fresh soil to prevent the contraction of disease and parasites which come from soil recently used by other fowls. In order to prevent soil contamination the brooder house needs to be of a type which can be moved easily. To make the brooder house The house is of frame construction safe from rats and other vermin, it must have a tight floor, and in order with shingles for siding. This follows to be readily movable this floor must the colonial design so common in New be made of boards. England and makes a most attractive house. Another feature that indicates the colonial are the half fan lights in the end gables opening into the attic. This is a very attractive and popular home building design. Because its, foundation walls are straight and as are also the side walls, it is a comparatively Inexpensive home to build. At the same time it provides five large and comfortable rooms and all the conveniences to be found in the modern home. . Styles in Face Brick Change Like Clothing Styles in face brick change like styles in clothes, automobiles and other things. Time was when a smooth, dark red brick was the accepted material with which to finish large buildings and small. That was before manufacturers had developed ways and means of obtaining the wide variety of colors and textures that are available now. During the last few years the predominant color used in finishing buildings in the Chicago district has been buff in various shades. This color has been used extensively in the suburban areas where much new housing construction has been and still is under way. Of late there has been a trend away from buffs, however, according to face brick manufacturers and the tendency now is toward grays and variegated shades of gray, with reds and darker hues finding increasing favor. The selection of face brick, however, whether to be used in a large apartment, commercial or office building, or in houses, is a matter of individual taste. There are scores of selections and combinations available, and we find that something of everything that is made in face brick is now being used. In fact, there is a greater variety in building today than ever before, as far as finishing exteriors is concerned, because there are so many kinds and colors of face brick to select from. Proper Insulation' Pays; Helps Cut Down Expense Insulation properly applied is not It can be shown that it pays its own way, first, by making it possible to reduce the size of the heating plant, and, second, by reducing the necessary consumption of coal. Insulation goes on quicklyis not difficult or expensive to apply. Furthermore, it can be obtained from almost any reliable building supply dealer. Like ail other materials used in building, it must be applied properly to get the desired results. Another interesting thing about, insulation is that it works almost as well in summer as it does in winter, for then it keeps the heat out and makes your house a more comfortable place tc live in. Some of the modern comforts with which we surround ourselves, which, having once been luxurious, are now coming to be thought of as necessities, add to the cost of living,, make it more difficult for us to build our homes on limited incomes; but insulation pays its own way. It is a bad building investment to do without it. expensive. Provide Rear Stairs If the Space Permits If space is available, and the pocket-boo- k permits, provide a rear stairway as well as a main one, so that the maid or even the housewife may go up or downstairs without passing through the main hail or the living room. Every housewife knows the value of such a stairway. It may save many steps and at times permit the ladies to skip upstairs and quickly arrange to meet a welcome visitor or to avoid an unwelcome one. . . -- ot power-operat- ed .. three-quart- er , one-ha- . . . , |
