property dinners was vic feature rc iture of the city council meet ng 1119 1 last ast T evening A c c composed of F K chirle Chr lei giard grard and nelson for the purpose of sub in n eting to the alvimen aldi imen tie ti e memorial chov ing the sentiment of main property owrel on the sidewalk question they v a ere accompanied ac compan led by J H ericksen Enc ksen judge chidester Chlde estert ster senator willis johnson J J woodring E E holtmann J M lauritzen Laun and june See emiller the reports on the two ca nases of property owners made m ade by councilmen coons and jensen and the commercial club committee differed somewhat some whit in regard to the stand taken by some of the citizens and this caused some of the delegates to criticise criticism critic ise councilman COO coons ns for the manner in which he made his canvas 1 I think that councilman coons min of putting it was aas unfortunate 11 said mr ile he asked mr lett is if he be was A as read to advance the money for ali the sidewalks alks if I 1 understand the meaning of the word ad ance it is to py beforehand this was as probably an inadvertence and it I 1 as certainly unfortunate mr hoffmann HofT mann thit that there are but fey few property owners who could deposit the money in n the bank to defray the cost of constructing side sidewalks alks in front of then property een though they are willing and able to mal male e pa p A mints ments is pi described bed by the statutes when the committee called on me mr coons stid slid we came to see you out oid about t b old wilks arengu redato put up the mui ii i i said mr lauritzen Laun if the had ended there I 1 w id probably hive said no I 1 was a w wondering on dering if the people along the street were all approached athe in the sa same way ay it ought to be ma made d clear on what basis the canvas m was as made 11 when we ve got down to business said councilman coons 1 I gave them to understand what we were there for and I 1 believe thit th it it N was nas as understood that the money would be collected as the work progressed sed there ought not to he be a controversy vers between the members of the council and the commercial club said senator johnson we kugit ne never c r to express our opinion III getting eirv the opinion of in making a canvas of this kind we ought to send parties who nho are arc nut concerned in the matter the members of the city council are sitting as impartial judges and I 1 would like to see tle the matter settled in in an impartial minner we will always find appo to public improvements and the more extensive these improvements are the greater will be the opposition we are all working for the same end said mr ericksen Enc ksen and I 1 think that when we understand each othor other we will get together it appears from this petition that the owners of most of the frontage have ex expressed Dressed themselves so alvs in favor of sidewalks and this thi s certainly justifies the council in taking up tin th matter I 1 realize that all these things take money but since the law contemplates that the expenses be defran defrayed ed by the people who own on property the matter could be arranged so thit that the installments could be paid without working a hardship on the city I 1 should feel very sorry to see any member of the city council putting himself in the way to prevent i a fair Ll expression from the people the city is growing gro we must keep up v ith the times as much as possible if we ve do not exert ourselves I 1 feil that we might lose in the race mayor maor christenson replied that a committee from the commercial club hid had met with the council several ago ind the council had assured these gentlemen that it v conduct an investigation 1 I bellive the committee has some kind of report to make this evening said lie he if not probably ahr they y will make it next meeting councilman young suggested su that the tho committee submit i its s report in order to give the other members of thu the council councilmen min opportunity to express their opinion councilman coons read his report since many of the giop erty owners replies were acre equivocal this report might be construed either cither way nay but it cannot be denied that the owners of more than one third of the frontage expressed themselves in this report is as being emphatically in favor of the improvements after the report was read there was some discussion ai to the stand which the L latter a ater day saints church might take on the question of colstr constructing acting sidewalks in front of the tabernacle in submitting the report on the block immediately south of the johnston hotel councelman coons remarked the property owners on that block seem to think thit if the other ahr three e blocks put in sid a they don dont t w int to see the paving district stopped with ith thit maor Christen christenn cn told the delaga remember that there are mana man improvements which the cita cit has before it at the present time and proceeded to name nama ovar some of these pioNe ments ile he remarked that ahe people had an erroneous impre sun sin in alga regard rd to his stand on the fidei ilk question inasmuch as he was not opposed to makin the improvements all of the foregoing was precipitated by the address of F r K chairman of the committee from the commercial club which was in bartas part as follows this question of sidewalks is one of the most important questions con floeting fion flon ting the people of richfield Rith field today in accordance with instructors instruct ons from
