A maximum of or 1000 acres can be used if the project project succeeds it is probable a hundred acres will vill be needed for seed next year ample seed is available from stock raised as an experiment the last two years by b y men interested in developing the industry stock from which this seed was produced was originally purchased at 35 and 40 a ton but the seed raised locally will vill be sold at 10 a ton the cost of seed about 3 per acre immediate planting is 13 urged as seed is almeady beginning to sprout and there is demand from outside areas for seed not used various questions regarding the industry ind were raised at the mass meeting sunday which was vas presided over by president W E poulson and conducted by sterling nelson chairman of the general church welfare committee fundamental points in favor of the project were listed as follows it has been demonstrated that with adequate sugar content for manufacture of artichoke and syrup according to laboratory analysis can be successfully grown in sevier county and experiments have been made on some of the poorer land seed is available in the county at a fraction of the cost coat of the foundation stock syrup one and a half to one and three fourths times as sweet as other s syrups aru ps is used for various sweetening purposes and in bakery and confectionery products commanding a premium price the elsinore sugar factory has been made available for use through cooperation of the general church committee oscar krenz of the oscar krenz copper and brass company of san francosco a man whom investigation vesti gation has disclosed to be reliable has made semi commercial laboratory tests for extraction of syrup from artichokes and is willing to place equipment in a pilot plant at cost and guarantee that the equipment will vill operate successfully mr king would have his engineer and chemist direct the work and teach the process to persons appointed locally this he said would be at his bis expense the matter of a market was discussed and it was reported that air krenz interested from the standpoint of advancing his own industry had spent two hours with the new york manager of a subsidiary of the american molasses company one of the largest companies in the world handling syrup products and was assured that the syrup which it is proposed to produce at the elsinore plant could be marketed figures were presented to show that figuring sales on the minimum market price for syrup the industry could be made profitable with some persons raising questions ions because of no guarantee or contract clyde C edmonds vice chairman of the general church committee offered to write to as continued on page 6 A artichoke artichoke acreage Is expected continued contin aed from page 1 socrates socia tes in new york and have them seccie some form of definite agreement thele is no other plant of the type proposed pio posed in t the he united states most of the syrup now comes from france altho although ugly making it clear that the project was purely one of pioneering a new industry the general and stake committee members expressed the attitude that there are sufficient points in its favor to warrant trying if it succeeds sevier and surrounding counties will benefit if it should fal fail some loss would necessarily be incurred general committee members stated that they did not come to sell the idea but that investigations had been sufficient to warrant warrant giving it thorough consideration and the final recommendation men dation of the chairman mr air nelson was that the regional committee appoint a finance committee and go ahead it was reported that it will vill take from to to install equipment depending on the amount of equipment now at the factory that can be converted into use no large group of farmers can afford to raise the artichokes without some compensation and allowance for this and operation one ration costs etc make it inadvisable to figure on less than capitol was the estimate of dr franklin S harris who urged conservatism but not pessimism various means of financing were discussed and that given most consideration as feasible is a plan to have business men or others can sign notes in any amount they feel p spared einred to risk these notes to be used as collateral in securing g a loan to finance the project act ct As far ar ns possible the fund will be raised in sevier S evier county but the finance committee will go 90 outside the county if necessary wide distribution of risk was urged persons sie niner notes would do so with the knowledge that they would have to pay the notes should the unexpected happen and the ilant fail dr coq topi th H AT dpn m xo who with 71 ed en r route from efrom the davne st etke ake conference conf prence stated that he had not made a study of the matter but he had confidence in those who had ard and felt that the venture was worth trying he upheld his confide confidence cc by offering to
