Show institute 0 aj fiffles parents pleased with demonstrations of cultural training in schools new trends in education in the sevier school district illustrative of trends in many other progressive districts of the country were demonstrated at the institute of elementary teachers of the district held saturday at the richfield high school superintendent A J ashman interpreted these new trends in his introductory remarks he stated that the american school originally patterned after the schools of western europe with emphasis on purely intellectual training are departing from this original pattern to adopt more of the greek philosophy with its activity school learning taught by experience cultural training of the emotion emotions character education interpretation and expression of the rhythm of life development of appreciation of art in nature the fostering of creative talent and enrichment of life are aims of the program As aw an example mr ashman explained that drawing as such is out of the school curriculum but that students are being encouraged to look on nature and interpret t or express their interpretation of it in painting pictures he stated in introducing the days program that the groups taking part were not chosen as the best in the district but that simil similar ar groups in cultural training could have been taken f from rom any se schools ll 11 of the district to demonstrate the work being in carried forward I 1 unusual interest of visiting parents and school patrons centered in the demonstration of choral reading directed by miss veline poppleton Poo Pou with pupils of the richfield first grade taking part the apparent joy the children found in reading in concert in larger or smaller groups or individually and catching the rhythm and spirit of the jingles and poems given in graduated order was pleasing interesting also were the demonstrations of teaching children to catch and make their own the rhythm and harmony of nature as exemplified in mediums of expression more familiar to the audience yet in general new as a tart part of the school curriculum demonstrations were presented in two part singing folk dancing social ial dancing rhythm bands and instruction instruction in music appreciation an art exhibit from all schools of the district and one from the california schools was displayed the first to the sixth grades were represented in the institute A number of parents took advantage of the opportunity to attend the institute |
