Show missionary writes from new york many reaper readers will no doubt find interesting a letter to the reaper from milan T who is laboring in the eastern states mission it reads in part after almost a year of real enjoyment that comes only from reading a home paper when one is 2500 miles away from home hoine I 1 am going to show my appreciation by writing a letter my first field of labor was in and around harrisburg Hams burg pa I 1 found the people there to be generally accommodating and open minded they are of the old pennsylvania dutch line they take great pride in their cooking for which I 1 was very glad in many of the rural sections pennsylvania dutch is the generally used language the landscape is entirely different from that of utah although pennsylvania is supposed to be a hilly state in the east to a westerner it is not extremely so while on my way from pittsburg to altoona one day I 1 saw a sign which read youre now at the extreme height of 2010 feet the hills are entirely covered with trees and undergrowth which is broken only where a farmer has cleared a spot and is tilling it tile the crops grown en own here are arc corn com and arain there is s however a con sd erable amount of tobacco grown in in some sections 1 I must tell vou of a unique religious group that lives here called the amish they are a type of the Plains people they live in and cultivate an entire valley about 70 miles west of harrisburg the men never shave aiom the time they hey are maried ma ried and none of them em ever cut their hair they the men all wear plain black clothes with maybe a blue shirt on special occasions the women wear plain dresses covering them from chin to ankles and a large bonnet on their heads sometimes on special occasions they wear some other plain color such as dark purple or blue they have no buttons tons on an any y of their clothing and the men wear a single supporter on their trousers in the from of a strip of cloth fastened in front thrown over the opposite shoulder and then fastened in the back they neither own nor ride in automobiles the old horse and buggy still furnishes their means of trans pot ration lon they worship in plain barn like frame churches and send their children to the old country schools but of course not in busses they refused an intended appropriation to build up to date school buildings bull diners they are a very thrifty group and expert farmers in spite of their lack of the use of modem machinery this might sound like a peculiar situation to be existing in this day clay but it does nevertheless other branches of the Plains people are the mennonites tes drunkards Dunk ards an and d quakers these groups are arc slightly t more liberal and use to some extent moden mode n inventions among other places of interest I 1 have visited hersl hersley hershey ey pa the tha rightly called chocolate acty C ty it is the home of all hershey chocolate products and the city is practically owned by mr hershey I 1 also went to the famous Hers hershey sports arena to see a Hers hershey game in arena everything from a hocky game to a rodeo is conducted within th last month I 1 have been transferred to newburg N Y this city is s located on the binks of the hudson river about 60 miles north of new york city and is in the heart of acres of apple orchards and grape vineyards so after spending ten months in what pennsylvanians ians declare to be the most beautiful state in the east I 1 am suddenly placed into what the new yorkers say holds the same high rank at any rate the topography of new york state Is more of the rolling hill type but still the hills and vales alike are green all over in new york are many beautiful lakes well distributed throughout the state 1 I am enjoying my stay in the cast very much but I 1 still say for a real home and good friends give be good old utah and in utah give me sevier county count Y 11 |
