Show RESPECT FOR LAW MENACED BY SIT DOWNERS the nation has lately witnessed some peculiar tactics on the part of groups of organized working men at first regarded somewhat lightly the sit down dom strikes keshave have passed the experimental stage as it were and have in the opinion of many led to a very serious situation when the first strike of this nature tied up a great motor organizations zat ions plant the public was prone to regard the happening as a prank on the part of some overzealous union workers who would soon grow tired and abandon their seemingly foolish notion of mccu occupying py unlawfully property in no sense belonging to them the po lice it was thought would quickly order the recumbent working men to move ow on and the matter would be soon forgotten but such was not to be the case to the surprise of many the w workers 0 r k e r s entrenched themselves more firmly in the plants and do doggedly held out for their terms forcing the companas comp anys executives to leave their own property it was rumored that should police or national guardsmen guardsman guards men be summoned and armed force be resorted to blood would flow freely and the nation would be rocked to its foundations dat ions this is perhaps just what some communistic minded agitators agitator s hoped would ensue by that overt act they would force a showdown a signal to precipitate a clash that would determine whether a government shall stand or fall as a democracy A serious state of affairs indeed with all due respect for organized labor and admitting that the various trades unions have done much good in the interest of the individual working man it must le be evident to every fair minded citizen that forceful seizure and unlawful possession of private property with attendant acts of sabotage and physical violence constituting sti as they do defiance of the law governing the nation and inviting the overthrow of constituted authority cannot but harm irreparably r the great labor unions that are held responsible for these drastic and dangerous measures one leading motor company of detroit in its petition to the court stated that the strikers demanded it recognize the union as the sole barg ening agency in dealing win wih all employees and in regulating any matter involving involving g wages hours and working conditions circuit judge allan campbell in granting an injunction to the motor corporation against the strikers upheld the former an and d severely criticised criticized the methods employed by the latter his decision stated in part it should be noted that the rl right to strike is in no sense involved that is a right of property in the defendants which the court is bound to respect and protect I 1 in like manner this court is bound to protect the plaintiff in its lawful use of its property there can be no compromise between the rule of law and the rule of violent self help in this sense then the issue in the case at bar is not between this plaintiff and these defendants respect for the courts and for law and order has been menaced the court has a right to expect the citizens i eizens of this community to give their entire cooperation and support in the position here taken A As an evidence of the ridiculous I 1 extent to which some of these thes sit down dawn strikers go a young woman of pontiac mich in en to collect wages which she claimed were due her entered her former employers car and threatened to sit there until her demands had been met despite the fact that the owner of the car was put to a great deal of annoyance this rapidly expanding sit down strike practice must effectively be dealt with if Ameri americas I 1 future welfare is to be guaranteed exchange |
