Show INSTITUTE HELD HEHE ON cology budget and school standards discussed teachers to join N E A the matter of keeping within the budget of the school district the subject of magnifying the principal of the school changes in the study course in the elementary grades and principles plea by which school standards will be judged were points of discussion at the institute of sevier district school teachers held at the richfield high school friday with separate sessions for the principals and cl elementary teachers in the forenoon and a joint session for all teachers in the afternoon superintendent A J ashman presided at the joint session and meeting of principals while mrs airs elise stillman primary supervisor directed discussions in the elementary department mrs stillman who heretofore has supervised only only the first four grades will this year have charge also of the fifth and sixth grades she presented plans for the addition of penmanship and science studies in her department the subject of finances was presented before the principals by mr ashman and talmage delange clerk of the school board 1 who h reviewed the main items in the budget and requested that teachers economize as far as possible without interfering with proper functioning of the school and compliance with state equalization standards they also urged that janitors be as economical as possible and that they work under supervision of the principals in connection with the discussion of finances both in the forenoon and af afternoon sessions it was pointed out that utah schools stand to lose for next year approximately in revenue if the next legislature makes effective the home exemption amendment which it is a foregone conclusion cl will be passed by the voters of the state teachers were urged to exert their influence in an effort to have legislators sent to the legislature who are arc wholly conversant with the matter and who will stand behind a program of taxation that is less burdensome to the farms and homes but which will supply necessary revenue in A a discourse magnify the principal mr ashman reviewed points of supervision that a principal occupied in teaching might find time for where parents are not enthusiastic over parents teachers associations he be rather favored the idea of letting the organization aniza tion drop and of bringing the school in contact with the parents rather by a visiting day or an occasional program or demonstration at the opening of the afternoon session the three high schools furnished a half hour of music under direction of clayton a clarinet quartet from salma salina composed of merrill durfee vermont hunt vernell christensen and carol frecci played one number and a violin solo was played by darlene with piano accompaniment by janice gabble also of salina A string quartet from richfield directed by owen bingham played two numbers the quartet was composed of janell warner wamer evelyn gledhill thelma birch and carolyn poulson burns hansen max abax larsen dale hunt and reeve hansen of monroe students of wesley pearce played two brass quartet selections the arrangement for the second number sweet and low was waa by one of the students burns hansen A pleasing innovation in the institute program was a series of talks by six of the teachers who spent the summer in study or in travel miss anna larsen who attended a special conference at stanford university J bud murphy who attended the university of california E AT wade who was at the B Y U summer session 33 if thompson who attended the U of U and made a tour of the northwest and california legrande magleby who went with an educational tour to the exposition in texas washington D C and new york and miss eudora miller who spent most of the summer in florida and later made a trip through some of the southern states and to washington D C and new york their talks were exemplary of the broadening influences a majority of teachers rs found in their travels or studies during the summer superintendent ashman was the concluding speaker devoting his remarks largely to teachers improving in the service immediately after the institute a meeting of the sevier district teachers association was held at which teachers voted to join the local association and the U E A and N E A B M thompson president during the past year presided and B A fowler secretary of the U E A and T J thornton of the provo schools were speakers the association elected rulon newell of elsinore president rulon of monroe vice president Eliza elizabeth of elsinore secretary five board members were elected |
