Show neutrality the action of congress in passing legislation designed to preserve neutrality for the united states in case of foreign wars of which there has been much fear recently is highly commendable there are those who cry complete disarmament as a means of preventing wars but after all nations are but composites of large numbers of very imperfect individuals for whom police service is required within their own countries and until these people develop greater individual perfection there will be need for police service in the form of standing armies for nations while it is necessary to ke keep ep a weather eyell eye open judgment and condemnation should not follow until there is in hand band ample evidence to support any charge made much of the war agitation can be traced to the fact that the experts of one nation are ready to suspect oth others ers every time there is a disagree disagreement e and immediately go into armament irm ament races which eventually bring on certain conflict whether it be in the united states or in any other country there has always been the case of selfishness on the part of certain factions a selfishness that has been quite effective in keeping them not only out of action in war but allowing them a chance to feather their nest as a result of war there has likewise been a hesitancy and caution born bom of experience peri ence that has kept mature people in comparative security while youth unafraid as some writer has chosen to call it has been thrust into action many politicians who vote for declarations of war would never have designed for themselves legislation providing for universal conscription in case of war should re cieve action as another step toward preservation of peace the dawn of international peace will not come until there exists throughout the world on the part of all people a willingness to be charitable chari tabe towards others we realize the small influence of our voice and the tiny part that the people of our locality play in shaping world affairs nevertheless in democratic countries su such ch as w ours it is necessary that every citizen take interest in current events and that the voters be well intentioned as well as well inform td ed when questions arise with foreign powers |
