Show LUNCH PROJECT or SCHOOLS aks AID OF PARENTS mm canning center changed at richfield work shows progress the me ERA canning center for richfield which has heretofore been at the high school has been moved to the second ward chapel on second west and second north streets to avoid conflict with the opening of the school term it is announced by mrs jessie thornell supervisor the center will be open from 8 a m to 5 p m daily except sundays relief clients are asked to prepare vegetables at home for pre cooking and the supervision will appreciate people coming early and arranging appointments application for a six months school lunch project in the schools of sevier district for relief clients as well as other children who are unable to go home during the lunch hour has been filed and its approval assured the ERA will furnish cans sugar and labor but the people are expected to donate the produce P T A committees will work in connection with the program parents of richfield are asked to bring produce for school lunch purposes to the center every monday friday or saturday and individuals so contributing will be allowed credit to apply on cost of lunches for their children during the school year beans corn tomatoes and apples will be canned through the office of superintendent A J ashman principals of the schools in salina sigurd koosharem Koo Roo sharem richfield elsinore monroe joseph and cove for which the school lunch project has been asked have been requested to take the matter up with parents and solicit cooperation in contributing vegetables while the canning centers are in operation miss elna eina miller of the U S A C extension service was in the county monday to discuss the matter with mr ashman and to visit canning centers she expressed herself as being pleased with the work being done in the canning centers to date canning centers have used for purposes other than the school lunch project no 2 and no 21 2 cans for canning fruit and vegetables during the month of august employing pe persons esons and serving families divided by towns the number of cans has been as follows richfield 2999 elsinore joseph aurora 2523 monroe 1908 redmond 2043 salina glenwood 1083 sigurd vermilion koosharem Koo sharem during 1934 sevier county was allowed cans these were distributed to the relief clients and filled with fruit and vegetables this year sevier county has been allotted cans for distribution to relief clients last year canning centers were established in about half of the towns of the county whereas this year they have been or will be established in all towns of the county the equipment used in the canning centers is furnished by the state ERA together with sugar bottle rubbers and lids the centers are operated under supervision of persons who have had actual training in the canning of fruit and vegetables A great benefit aside from the value of materials canned is the educational value which has come to the groups of men and women engaged in the work all canning for school lunches for 1935 36 will be done with ERA labor |
