Show local chairman is is appointed disappointed for annual navy day dr D B gottfredson has been appointed chairman for the celebration of navy day in richfield sunday october 28 the appointment was made by chas R IL rabey mabey who by appointment by the president of me navy league has been chairman for the state of utah for the celebration of navy day since its inception navy day was inaugurated in 1922 by the navy league of the united states and its observance is sponsored annually by the league october 27 was selected because it is the anniversary of the birth of president theodore roosevelt so much of whose life was devoted to establishing a sound naval policy for the nation this year however because october 27 comes on sunday october 28 has haa been proclaimed navy day in addition to paying a deserved tribute to the sea heroes of the nation and recalling the splendid part the navy has played in making and keeping us a nation the observance has proved a valuable means of fostering a better understanding of the navy and its work such information in a country where government is by public opinion is essential to the formation of correct judgments affecting naval policy and in this work of information the navy day observance has played a considerable part the united states can readily afford to maintain a navy in con with her naval policy and equal to that of any other navy in the world such a navy is needed not for aggression but for the defense of the nations policies trade and territory the late president coolidge in his armistice day speech of 1928 summed the situation up most excellently in these words all human experience peri ence seems to demonstrate that a country which makes reasonable preparations for defense is less likely to be subject to a hostile tile attack and less likely to suffer a violation of its rights which might lead to war to be ready for defense is not to be guilty of aggression it is our duty to ourselves and to the cause of civilization to the preservation of domestic tranquility to our orderly and lawful relations with foreign people to maintain an adequate army and navy on august 7 1935 the navy department opened sealed proposals for the construction of thirteen naval vessels of various types on september 9 the navy department awarded contracts for the construction of these 13 new ships in private yards and the allocation of eleven more ships to navy yards making a total of 24 vessels for the 1935 fiscal year 1935 1936 building program this building is a continuation of the policy established lost last year under the provisions of the vin son trammell bill approved march 27 1934 1034 which authorized construction st and replacement of vessels within limits established by the washington and london treaties |
