Show intense interest lia terek t is Is aroused by possibility of schools se ch closing late in february board schedules meeting next monday to consider problem JONES EXPLAINS the date of the regular monthly meeting of the sevier district board of education which had been scheduled for february 13 has been set ahead one week and will be held monday february 6 to c consider the serious financial situation which threatens threaten sto to force the closing of the school term the latter part of feb february auary unless some method of relief is found this matter was the principal topic of discussion at the meeting of the parents teachers association thursday night of last week when lewis W jones president of the board of education explained in detail the financial condition of the school district the meeting was presided over by dr 21 markus vice president of the PT P T A mr air jones stated that the indebtedness of the school district had increased from on july 1 1929 to on july 1 1932 he said that a special tax levy of 3 mills voted in 1929 to run for five years for a building pro program granz had resulted in only instead of the estimated due to the great delinquency delm quency in tax payments in addition this building program has actually cost instead of the estimated plus for building sites for equipment and for miscellaneous expense mr jones stated that in his opinion the issuing of long term warrants at this tune time was out of the question due to the fact that a present bonded indebtedness of must be met starting in 1935 and continuing until paid off at the rate of per year it is understood however that the teachers are willing to continue teaching the full term this year and accept warrants in payment for their services payable perhaps in five years time and not starting their redemption for two years in order to give the district a chance to get on its feet financially thus if were issued in warrants this would require the raising of only about a year for the three ye bearg beginning in 1935 another factor that mr tones did not mention and which is ia slightly encouraging is the fact that this year the first installment of some will come to the district from the new equalization law and this will increase each of the next five years until in 1938 the district will get from this one source alone this is in addition to the regular state apportionment portion ment it is said then too it is expected that considerable sid erable revenue will accrue to the district from the tax redemption sales which will ill take place next may or june and always results in some money in addition to the regular tw tax levy for the schools there has been considerable discussion about the bus contract which the school has had with a private firm for three years some claiming that it is entirely too generous to those individuals who own the busses while it is true that the board of education is paying 36 cents per mile for the uso use of these busses B C luth clerk of the board explained that this actually represents a saving of several thousand dollars a year over what the board had previously been spending when they operated their own busses besides mr luth said they now get better service better busses and operate over more routes than the board used to cover the expense for these busses the first two years yeara was waa higher in proportion to what it will be for the remaining five years of the contract due to the fact that the bus owners had to finish paying for these busses in two years the question of finishing out the school term to some eight months length is indeed a serious one and has two sides of distinct importance the teachers say that they cannot give a years credit for only five months and this will work a great handicap upon the students especially those that may move to other districts those teachers have been eminently fair duri during ngau all this crisis and they are considering the welfare of the students aa well as of themselves when they offer to accept warrants for pay in order to finish out the regular term on the other hand band the taxpayers who are so grevious previously ly burdened already are opposed to the district incurring a greater indebtedness either by bonds or by warrants under the present conditions w when hen there is so much agitation for individuals and taxing bodies to live within vi th in their incomes it has even b been ce n suggested that the schools in some districts dietric ts may be forced to close for an entire y year ear in order to got get back to solvency but of course when this is done the income from the state would stop misses berta larsen lone ione jonsen jensen and alta young V visited sited at koosharem Koo sharem sunday |
