Show fro frequent iu ent storms cover state with heavy snowfall which A augurs well for farm crops sevier water commissioners report indicates good runoff run off MORE SNOW A general feeling of optimism prevails throughout utah as to the prospects for irrigation water next summer due to the storms that have visited every part of the state during the past few weeks and have broken records of years standing in many places the reaper has just received the annual report of brice me bride sevier river water commissioner as to the precipitation and snowfall and despite his tendency to be ultra ultraconservative conservative in his statements there is considerable reason to feel encouraged by this report of the snow conditions on sevier watersheds on january 27 1933 the last storm that was included I 1 in this report was that of january 24 but there has been considerable snowfall almost every day since that date the snow on the ground at various points in this watershed on the date of the report was as follows as nearly as could be esti mated due to the difficulties of drifting rifting rif ting bryce canyon rim 39 inches rubys rabys inn 30 inches red canyon 16 36 inches sevier virgin summit 24 inches hatch 18 inches panguitch 11 inches circle ville 3 inches angle 4 inches escalante summit 36 inches all of these measurements correspond very closely to the amount of snow on the ground on february 1 1932 mr mcbride says but it is mostly new snow and hence does not contain the water content of last year in general the above figures show that the accumulated precipitation pi tation october december 31 of this yera yer was only 38 per cent of last year but this period follows n 1 august september precipitation tat at was twice as great as the august september precipitation in 1931 indicating a better possibility for effective runoff of the snow that is on the ground while all stations for january are not yet available the figures from the two reported and snow measurements would indicate that januar january j 1933 will show practically the same precipitation as january 1932 the increased river flow so far this season over the same period for 1932 shows that the ground water reservoir is in better condition than a year ago the increase is shown by an increase in the total storage available in the sevier bridge and plute reservoirs of acre feet over last year to summarize it will take bet ter ler than normal january march precipitation if this seasons primary water supply reaches last season but in no case should it be as low as the 1931 supply As for storage the S B reservoir will have the same as last season and the no less with a slight chance that it will be better |
