Show LOCAL delegation FOB AND HOAD richfield live wires rescue vital measures from legislative morgue two measures one of special importance to richfield and the other to the entire county are now pending before the state legislature one of these is the bill which will enable the armory to be built and the other is what is known as the highway bill word was received here last week that these matters were in serious danger of slipping away so a delegation composed of mayor F G martines Mar lines commissioner G A staples W L warner and 0 R went to salt lake to look after these items these gentlemen were joined by jonathan lloyd deputy state auditor and V J malmsten president of the richfield commercial club and spent the major part of the week on the job they found the armory bill pigeonholed pigeon holed in the appropriations committee of the senate where it was intended by its opponents that it should experience peri ence the sleep from which there is no awakening but before leaving for home mayor martines received assurances from enough senators to bring the bill out of committee to the calendar and this has since transpired and i its it s passage is is now very probable senator william T owens of this district was in richfield this week and was vms taken on an inspection spec tion trip over the battery equipment and assured the local people that he would do everything he could to secure the passage of the bill the measure as it now stands will call for an appropriation of for the armory another measure of great importance to sevier county is the bill by representative S M jorgensen providing for the establishment of a system of secondary state highways it is proposed to take in between and miles of present county roads and make them secondary state highways briefly this means that the state and county will cooperate in the construction and the state will be required to maintain them out of the gasoline tax thus relieving the counties of this burden and greatly bene fitting the traffic over these highways the bill as originally presented contained two roads in sevier county one leading from salina to scipio and the other from monroe to joseph it had been expected that the richfield glenwood road would also be included but when the bill came out it was not there staples warner and put in three days up ar around aund the state capital and they were strenuous days two or three conferences with the road commission left them right where they started but after they began working on the members of the house committee on highways to whom the bill was referred progress began to be noted the local delegation is indebted korep to representative george W of wayne county for his valuable assistance in the matter public hearings on the bill had been closed by the committee some time ago before the local men but mr arranged that the delegation i night might appear pe ar before the committee and briefly plesent their case commissioner staples made a statement outlining the attitude of the county commissioners commissioners and pointing out the amount of traffic over the road and the necessity of its being made a state highway the splendid efforts of the delegation were finally crowned with success the armory bill was rescued from the morgue and an amendment was added to the road bill making king the richfield GI glenwood enao od r road 0 a d a state highway the monroe and salina roads stay in the bill the committee feels that their trip was worth while in view of the fact that both of these projects were practically killed when they reached salt lake it may just be well to suggest that close tab be kept on oil the situation so as to prevent any slips |
