There are no breathing spells on the schedule for the 1923 Ohio State eleven. Exactly eight Saturdays lie between the opening game and the season's finale, and during tbe Interim eight games are to be played, no open date Intervening as a rest period as there has been some times in the past. The opener offers action against Wittenberg, one of the best teams In Ohio circles. There follow, moreover, four Western conference struggles and the Princeton battle on successive Saturdays. This Is an ordeal that would test any squad. Muskingum, which Is seventh In line, is a newcomer on the list, but has hud a fine record in Ohio of late years. Illinois, as the final opponent, speaks for Itself. A review of the "27 season shows, moreover, that the Ohio Staters are up against some great scoring com-binations. Wittenberg, Northwestern, Michigan, Indiana, 1'rlnceton, Iowa, Muskingum and Illinois succeeded In rolling up 1,320 points last year while their opponents were garnering a mere 476. Indiana was the only mem-ber of the octette to be d with 104 points to the 107 for the Hoosiers' foes. " Curiously enough, It was Musking-um which had the largest total of the lot with 208 points. Illinois can be rated as the best "defensive" team, there being only 24 tallies rung up In 1027 against the Illlnl. Ohio State, In 1027, held a point advantage of 131 to 02 over grid ene-mies. Sport Mates Several dubs say a lighter golf ball won't make their game harder. Tunney Is referred to as "the kill-er." Well, be knows his dead lan-guage. She also serves who only waits and keeps dinner hot for a champion golfer, Grady Adklns, White Sox hurler, managed the Vlcksburg Cotton States league club In 1024. Michigan has one two-yea- r veteran eligible for the team this fall. He Is George Rice, halfback and captain. We have a prize fight occasionally and a national campaign every four years but baseball goes on forever. There are 36 baseball players In the American league who have served In the army, navy and marine corps. ,. Wisconsin plays one of Its toughest games as early as October 6. The Badgers meet Notre Dame that date. Tbe Quantlco Marines football team will make its headquarters at the Municipal stadium In Philadelphia this fall. . A boxing fan thinks It Is fnnny about a watermelon not being at Its best until It sounds like a hollow shell It develops, after all, that Pugwash, Nova Scotia, which a Cleveland mil-lionaire Is to restore, Is not a water-ing place for boxers. . P. Smith, D. Smith, and W. Smith all rode racehorses In a single day's program at the Windsor track in Canada. After a brief visit with his bride to Glsborne, New Zealand,- - Tom Heeney will return to the United States and enter the heavyweight tournament The Impression Is general that Gene Tunney Is a nice boy and that some way should be found to prevent rough prize fighters from picking on him. Examination of many statues, Gre-cian urns, etc., made during the earlier Olympic period, falls to show any nineteen year-ol- d girls scrambling over hurdles. www Mickey Devlne, veteran Interna-tional league catcher who has seen service with nearly all the clubs In tbe circuit, plans to retire from base-ball next year. He Is the proprietor of a billiard room In Stillwater, Minn. - e George Dawson, present New fork state amateur golf champion, played football not so long ago at the Univer-sity of Illinois, winning fame as one of the gridiron stars of the Western Conference Paul Stewart, assistant baseball coach of the University of Illinois, has been appointed head baseball coach of Northwestern university. He succeeds Maury Kent, who will become assist-ant foobull coach. Bases Were Loaded, but Jakey Atz Didn't Worry Jakey Atz, whose Fort Worth club won several pennants In a row In the Texus league, Is one of the best story tellers In basebull. And his favorite ftory Is about a game In which the opposition, only one run behind, had the bases loaded and one of the most dangerous hit-ters In the league up, but Jakey wasn't worried, because be knew no matter what that dangerous batter did, even if he cracked out a homer. Atz's club would win. The butter was at the plate out of turn, and that U Juke's story. "It was a perfect spot," he says. "The Beaumont club had three on and Jim Galloway was up, and that baby could hit They were one run behind and two were out. Well, It didn't make any difference what Jim did. Me was butting out of turn and the rules say 0at a batter who bats out of turn Is automatically out Luck Uy, he popped op, but Imoglne what an argument might have come up? "That's the kind of a spot that makes you feel gwd all to gain and nothing to lose." Ancient Pistol H. M. Itaab, of Dullastown, Pa., col-lector of old horse pistols manufac-tured In the United States, recently came into possession of s weapon which was manufactured In Virginia In 3805. The weapon Is Bnid to be the oldest of Its type in existence, as the oldest previous date for the stile was 1SC3. Children Study Laws The state of North Curollna has adopted a practical way of protecting its future redestrlons from automo-biles. Once a month school teachers are requited to dLcuss before their pupils a digest of the state traffic laws. Yale's Kicking Star J. J. Iloben, kicking star of tbe Tale team, who will do most of the booting for the Blue during the 1928 season. lie's shown here getting his toe Into trim by booting the pigskin over the bar during the first workout of the season. Glen Warner Advocates Novel Plan in Football Glenn Scobey Warner, veteran Stan-ford coach, Is out as an advocate of the two-tea- football system, which will be given a trial by several Mid-western universities this season. Warner has devised the following plan: Divide the squad Into two teams, one being composed of seniors and the other of juniors., Sopoho-more- s would fill In as substitutes on both elevens. Neither team would bs considered the first varsity, being classed "A" and "B" to suit the purpose. The elevens would represent Stanford on alternate Saturdays. Stanford's schedule Is bo arranged that the juniors would be called up-on to meet Washington and Southern-Californ- ia if the seniors played against California in the annual "big game." A majority of tbe veterans will be seniors. It Is expected that Coach Warner's plan will be submitted to the faculty and students for study. Critics pointed out that while the proposition would enable twice as many players to participate, it would also weaken the Cardinals. Yost Has Returned Coach Fielding tost has returned to Michigan and assumed personal charge of the Wolverine football squad. . His ' statement follows: "Though it was commonly thought that .' would not assume the duties I relinquished to Tad Wieinan until next year whon my boy will report for the squad and when I will have another opportunity to beat the Har-vard "Hed Jerseys," still the lure of the same was too strong." Football Enthusiasm Is Growing Fast in Turkey Spain's new-foun- d enthusiasm for football, which, we are told. Is endan-gering tbe popularity of tbe bull fight. Is equaled In Turkey, where the gnme has so ca-ig- the fancy of the pub-lic that It Is played all through the summer. It Is not, however, without Its detractors. These complain that the teams seem to be two groups of Implacable enemies vowing death to each other and each determined to give bis adversary a knockout blow.
