Show LIVESTOCK by DR HUGH HURST tooele thoele county agent beef cattle the agricultural possibilities of the county are numerous and varied they include cattle both beef and dairy sheep both farm flocks and range small grains rains horses and potatoes the cattle are rather numerous and are fair to good in quality showing a predominance of shorthorn and hereford breeding while we recognize that there is room for much improvement proem pro that may be brought about through a more systematic culling and grading of stock set let they are arc above the th average cattle of the state in quality tooele thoele county boasts of one of the best herds of shorthorns Shor thorns of the state slate een though they are comparatively few feu in number photograph no 1 shows broadbooks Broad hoo hooks k s barron barren with a group of his get on the farm of I 1 R A fenton of erda this noted sire has stood first in his class on various occasions ca and has been awarded aNar ded grand champion at the state fair 1924 and at north salt lake show in april 1926 photograph no 2 shows shou aa a fine tipe shorthorn eow cow with calves of the breed that show typical va nations in color that are characteristic of the breed dair cattle while da dairying irving in the county is still in its infancy let jet there are arc numerous fine individuals both males and females which represent the hol last season and some good colts produced though not as many as we would have liked mares of the ape and ra quality lity shown in the following cut when mated to one of the remount stallions should produce horses that would w uld please any saddle loer hogs hogs the hogs of the county are not par ticul aily numerous jet ct most of the better class of farmers produce butcher and pickle enough first class clas s hams and bacon to supply their home requirements quire ments there is a of tho the various breeds 0 of f lard ts apo p 0 hobb owned in the various settlements of the county this phase of agriculture N will ill be stimulated because there is an abundance of good pasture byproducts front from the home manufacture of butter and slum skim milk and any quantity of grain all of which are vital to the production of good pork ahe people generally are seeing the necessity of carrying on a more nearly balanced type of agriculture and consequently are adding mote moie and better animals and pie pic paring to better care of small grains it has been recognized for miny sears cars that tooele thoele land was nas nery ery fertile and produced abundantly of the various arious crops jet et in 1925 she was thrown into the front rank tor for the production of the best wheat shown at the state fair the prize winning grain was produced by R N bu bush sh on clover r creek under the following cul tn aaion lind plowed ed in summer ind and early fall and seeded needed with turkey red forty five pounds per acre in present time is the possibilities brought out recen recently in the southern pirt part of the count for the production of certified seed potatoes they grow burbanks Burban Ls early chios blue Vic tois idaho murals yields of four hundred to five fine hundred bushels per acre are common and usually they run considerable higher than that sugar beets do very well vell yielding up to thirty tons per acre but unfortunately tuna tely some of the best sugar beet areas are arc so far from the railroad beet production pio plo is not practical fruits and vegetables tables have hae always done well in tooele thoele valley alley wherever water is available berries in particular yield abundantly the quality of which is unsurpassed the one thing we ne need most is an increase of population to he help I 1 p develop 0 p our ast areas of fertile land and underground water which is abundant particularly in the southern portion of the county too many of us ore are land poor and consequently are standing in the way ay of our own oin development |
