Show TOOELE the utah pioneers under the leadership er ship of brigham young came to salt lake valley on saturday S july 21 1847 on sunday they held religious services and rested on monday they climbed ensign peak and there raised the stars and stripes on tuesday bangham with a company of men went nent out to black rock to view the great salt lake and bathe in its waters while there professor orson pratt left the company and rode around the south shores of the lake and through tooele thoele valley vallel as far as the adobe rock on E T hill just exactly six miles from the black rock where brigham young was camped and then returned and joined the lake party again gning professor pratt the honor of being tho th first of the utah pioneers to enter tooele thoele valley in the winter of 1848 1948 three or four government herders gerders established herding quarters at black rock these herders gerders were taking care of government stock belonging to captain stansbury who was aas at the time fame engaged in surveying the great salt lake its islands and other parts of utah ho however aber itaas it aas was not until some time in the middle of september 1849 that the first settlers entered tooele thoele valley with a view viea to find homes and a settlement judson tolman wife and one child josiah call wife and one child ind and samuel mecham and wife were acre the first three families to enter jocele tooele valley and settle down with the object in view of making homes for themselves and children chil dien the three families came together the exact date mr tolman has forgotten but it was mas some time in the middle of september 1848 in then trails through the valley they took time to examine the best locations for homes and made trips into the cannons and upon the mountains in search of springs of water and groes of timber after a few das explorations they concluded to settle down on a small stream just south of tooele thoele city and the stream has been called pain and suffering 10 A 0 1 v r ap W WAITING THEIR TURN came forth the beautiful city of too ele surrounded with wealth and opportunity port unity the oquirrh range of mountains to the east cast are tho the most unique in the entire world moto moie than a third of the entire mineral wealth of the state has hab been taken out of this structure of natural wealth and billions of dollars worth orth of mineral still rent remains ains untouched the oquirrh range extends from the southern shores of great salt lale lake to bingham west nest to stockton southeast to ophir south to old mercur thence into the eureka mammoth and tintic gintic districts the great bingham district supplies the smelter with an endless chum chain of ore by a tram which operates over the mountain a distance of fo four ur miles the mining districts along the oquirrh range in tooele thoele county are among the oldest in the state the stockton district was as opened up by men who aho composed the johnson army which passed through in the sixties and his has enjoyed great prosperity at times and many men have been made rich aiom products of the mine this same district after a lull of several sears ears is now coming into prominence as a camp through new and encouraging strikes of rich ore in virgin territory of old mines going farther south and cast ast to the ophir district we ne find a rather remarkable mercur district when it was aas a rich and prosperous mining city today it is a camp of the past the mines having placed 0 out ut of pasing pacing ore mercur was inas at one time the metropolis of the county and bid strong to remove the county seat from tooele thoele to its prosperous community at the decline of mercur tooele was aas on the incline the int international smelting smelling Sm elting company was as starting the construction of its smelter on the east foothills of the valley and a railroad was being built through tooele thoele to connect with the trunk line of the salt lake route later made a part of the great union pacific system one sear ear changed thoele tooele from a small farming community into a thriving industrial center its growth was as at the time nd ind tooele beyond reason and it has just now reached the place where it can completely fill the clothes tailored for it almost twenty sears ears ago tooele thoele is in need now of a large number of new dwelling places to house its increasing population and the fail of 1926 will undoubtedly see this need satisfied as the smelter is taking a home building program under its wing ving mr harry G baker local tion of this indebtedness is the lowest in the entire state of utah tax levy for 1924 for county state and schools outside of towns was nas 16 5 mills for 1925 21 3 mills the increase in 1925 was nas of the county since the beginning of its settled history the lack of summer range has placed a permanent and serious handicap on the west sl side de of the county because of and condition of the state the range sheep will nill always occupy an important position in our sheep industry but the growing importance and popularity of the farm flock has recently eaten inroads into the sheep industry of six good stallions of the draft breeds ov ned in the various communities of the county the farmers are again taking hold of the tha situation and are breeding in an increased gumbei of mares this season the saddle loving people especially especial lS those who are fond of sad saddle dle sports will be happy to learn that there is increased interest inte iest in the breeding of horses there is ir mg t line li it i 1 sic I 1 F 0 4 grantsville GRANTS VILLE DISTRICT SCHOOL the fore part of november 1921 there was nery slight gerdun germination aaion before the ground froze up that fall probable the majority of the s seedlings winter killed the grain came up well in the spring of 1925 and grew rapidly when the ground vas a as dry enough after the winter snow had melted off and the grain was up the field as gone over with the culli pac packer ker which pulverized the few fenn clods left after the winter effect of freezing and thawing and left a fine mulch on the ground samples of this grain won on first and second prizes and sweepstakes in open competition at the state fair besides wheat of the various varieties oats barley and rye produce abundantly potatoes in ears gone by tooele city has produced the champion potatoes of the state but more interesting at the 1923 1925 26 and 1926 27 the levy lcy appears aP Tears rather high but vohen A h on it is understood that 4 3 e county school district claims to be the first county to abandon the bonding plan for the erection of new school buildings for the more popular plan of the special tax or what nhat may be called the plan of pay as you go ahe funds for the erection of the junior high school and gymnasium in e and the new high school to be built at grantsville Grants ville were raised by the special tax plan to senior high schools are main one at tooele thoele and another at grantsville Grants ville at ophir the ninth and tenth grades are taught and a junior ugh high school is maintained at tooele thoele the school buildings of the district ar are e in mostly 0 alst ly modern and up to date even t the e smaller aller schools many of them hive have modern heating plants and toilet facilities ind and others are being made modern where water is available the new junior high school at tooele was completed december 18 13 1925 at an approximate cost of 00 it contains ten large class rooms and other smaller rooms and one of the finest school gymnasiums in the state of utah used jointly by the senior high school and the junior high school it has a balcony on two sides and across one end which chich together with nith seating capacity on the main floor furnishes ample seating capacity capaci tv for all occasions in one end of the gymnasium is a beautifully constructed arched alcove which provides a place for dance orchestras and has h as proved to be excellent in acoustic properties the music sounding equally well inell in all parts of the building the senior high school building at tooele completed in 1913 is a modern structure in every respect and provides a splendid place for all phases of high school work this school h I 1 because of its standard of work A cork and its organization and administration has recently been admitted to the north western association of secondary schools the grade school building at grants ville is one of the finest buildings of ts its type in the state
