Show CALLS ATTENTION gr BEET what will become of the sug sugar ar i in industry in utah in general and in in our part of the state in particular since the utah idaho sugar co deci decided dedon on ceasing operation in the elsinore factory relinquishing the territory to the gunnison sugar co this latter company in exchange relinquishing solicitation for beets in utah and salt lake counties the above question has become a mooted one just now the congress of the united states is holding a public hearing on the tariff and representatives of the beet glowers as well v ell as of sugar manufacturing concerns are in washington D C to voice their opinion and plead piear for a raise in the tariff and for restriction of the importation of sugar from cuba and the Is lands islands while these hearings are going on in washington the gunnison sugar co now the sole beet buyer in our county is doing everything possible to revive the interest in beet growing browin and to save production of this ailt best cash crop we have for our county tiie the company has requested one of the most successful beet growers in the northern part of the state john F burton of garland to look over the territory and voice his opinion about the future of beet growing in se beier county mr burton is in the county now and intends to stay here for a certain length of time long enough to make a thorough investigation and emphasized in his interview with our editor that he will approach the question entirely from the standpoint of the beet grower in this interview mr burton stated as follows the entire sugar industry of the country has been going on for years without much if any profit and a good deal of the time sustaining a substantial loss T the he hope that the future may hold something better has been the incentive that has k kept pt the farmer growing beets and the manufacturer making sugar A point has now been reached where both farmer and manufacturer are more or less discouraged they both feel that they have been forced to compete with impossible conditions the american fan farmers ners standard of living is higher than that of any other farni farm people in the world they have been compelled to produce the raw product of sugar in in competition with those who have the lowest standard of living in the world it has not only been an unequal but an unjust condition we have lived through a number of years with the hope that the sugar industry of our country would be protected by our government ern ment with an adequate tariff placing this industry on the same film basis as many other prosperous industries in our country we believe that time has now come and everyone interested in the industry and this means bankers merchants 1 doctors lawyers farmers manufacturers of f sugar and d everyone else who benefits from the revenue of the sugar ind industry astry should feel their own responsibility in maintaining this business until relief becomes effective margins are increased and there is a reasonable profit for those who produce the raw product and those who manufacture that product for the market the price now being paid for b beets ts by the sugar company of this district is the highest price that has yet been offered in the state of utah if other districts receive the same price it will be because your local company has led the way nay the price of sugar is declining almost daily and has now reached the lowest price in more than twelve years in face of this fact your local sugar company Is ready to gamble against all odds to sustain the industry until help comes realizing that if the help is denied the sugar business of these mountain valleys has failed the sugar companies realize their responsibility and it is hoped that every other industry and citizen realizes their responsibility everyone is responsible in some degree for the prosperity of his own country 11 |
