Show THE NONVOTING NON VOTING CITIZEN if there is one thing in the matter of our recent municipal elections over which to rejoice is the fact that ninety per cent of our enfranchised citizens went to the polls to exercise the privilege of suffrage it is to be hoped that this condition will prevail also in the much more important national elections to be held a year from now the nonvoting non voting cit citizen izzen is one who forgets that guffra suffrage e is not only a privilege but also a duty ralph mph M easley of new york who is the guiding spirit and guardian angel of a national civic organization which for years has been carrying on a campaign to arouse people to their voting rights is about to launch a new crusade he has been visiting washington seeking information as to the best way to arouse good citizens who do not vote as to their political and moral responsibilities easley is is a roan man of vitality courage and persistence but he be will need the best that is in him if he is going to accomplish the results which he seeks the nonvoting non voting citizen is a real problem As a result of his ci existence e our congressional representatives in in all parties ale aie selected by minorities the same situation prevails in in many municipal and state governments the extraordinarily increasing total of municipal and state expenditures and the ascending scale of tax rates can be laid at the door of this minority representation sen tation our governments today are arc largely manned by men who represent the tax eaters rather than the taxpayers the six voter is in the saddle saddie and the nice citizen who belonged in the ten voting category at the hour now is hastening to his golf links As a result the six voter names the man who spends the money the ten group only appear as cultural objectors to public waste and extravagance which has been accomplished and is beyond correction how to arouse these people is hard bard to determine we have given them voting booths almost at their door we have provided mail voting systems and even transportation but their actual parti ci pation in the government still re mains at a low ebb it may be thi thal we will have to wait until as a result of this wholesale wholes ale participation nonparticipation non in voting a political catastrophe chic i can be laid directly at their door arouses them |
