Show CONCRETE OR GRAVEL ROAD BETWEEN RICHFIELD AND SALINA in our article on the conference the asi assistant stant chief engineer of the state road commission had with representative richfield citizens which article was published in our issue of last week we gave this engineer mr air H S kerr credit for being a clever dip lomat developments which took place since then are more than ample proof that we were right mr kerr by his clever diplomacy was able abl e to convince the salina lions club that we will not get any road between salina and richfield at all if we do not acquiesce in the plan sponsored by mr kerr to make it a gravel road mr kerr cleverly brought into play some I 1 figure and statistics tending to show that the cost to the county exclusive the federal aid for a concrete road would be per mile or a total of for the entire stretch nearly more than we actually have that we would have to go into debt and increased taxation for such a concrete road that it is a matter of economy to build a gravel road and so on the lions club fell for this diplomacy and adopted a resolution favoring economic spending of the countes coun tys money and going on record for the gravel proposition 11 we are very much afraid that the salina lions will stand very ven much alone in this step and that the overwhelming wh elming majority of the people our county commissioners included will continue to urge and insist on what was P promised us and what we voted the bond issue for a concrete road and to this majority we feel like giving the advice stick brother stick we have written so frequently already in favor to sticking to our right we have explained so thoroughly thorough aly why we should do 10 so we have given so many reasons for the absolute necessity of concrete on this much traveled road ad that it would look like carrying water into the ocean to say much more only one thing we wish to state in refuting the figures mr kerr arrived ved at he stated we do not know on what authority that it will cost a mile to give us a concrete road and on the basis of this assumption endeavored to show us that the cost to the county will ill be a mile or a total of while we have only about at our disposal where mr air kerr took his figures from we do not know we are arc able boi however Never to quote a few authoritative figures which throw an entirely different light on tiie the subject our figures are a tabulation of seven of the latest concrete projects undertaken by the state as follows nephi utah county line miles cost per mile smithfield cross roads miles cost per mile spanish fork payson miles cost per mile richfield adjoining pavement 15 miles per mile salina redmond 3 miles per mile payson juab county line miles per mile 0 these are typical jobs and the figures based upon the bids of the contractors doing the work include e all grading draining structures and concrete paving they also include 10 per cent for engineering and contingencies gen cies this figures to an average of about i T W i I 1 at this average rate the countes coun tys share per mile would not be but only per mile or for eighteen miles less than wh which ich would still leave us a surplus of uiese these our figures are perhaps not as impressive as those given by mr kerr but they have another very good quality they are convincing and ought to be convincing to the state road commission also therefore we repeat stick brother stick |
