Show SOME compliments FOR OUR commercial CLUB the boxelder Box elder journal of brigham city W R holmes editor and pub usher comments on the booklet ie ic issued and broadcast by the richfield eld commercial club in so complimentary a way that we take plew plead ure in reprinting the article in full it reads I 1 the richfield commercial club has proposed something for utah which if carried out would revolutionize the state it would affect everybody and everything in the state it would affect property values it would affect our methods of living it would affect our churches and our schools it would affect hotels garages gas stations stores and restaurants but the effects would be beneficial decidedly so communities now isolated would be put on direct paths of commerce over which a never ending throng of inter and intra state travelers would be passing small communities would grow into large communities large communities into still larger communities small businesses into big businesses the minutes between milestones in all parts of the state would be lessened the journey from salt lake city the capital to logan to price to the uintah basin to bryce canyon to zion park to st george to richfield to beaver or to milford would be rendered a joyful occasion rather than an adventure in fact the consummation of rich fields daring but decidedly logical and practical proposal would prove the most important event in the history of the state since the landing of the mormon pioneers in 1847 and the union pacific railroad in 1859 what mat richfield has proposed according to an attractive bulletin of the commercial club of that point is the completion of a comprehensive system of concrete highway to cross our state from east to west and from north to south the program embed ics acs the construction of miles of ahe the best kind bind of road that it is pos sible to build and would be executed in in a ten year period best of all such a system would be financed by the pay as you go plan bonds are discouraged in fact it is shown that such a project as stupendous as it seems could easily be built out of the savings in decreased costs of motor vehicle transportation which alic system would effect in substantiation of this claim fads facts and figures are quoted from american americ an highways the official publication of the highest road authority in the world today i e c the american association of state highway officials the cost to the motor owner is shown to be scarcely the cost of one tire 13 1362 62 to be exact the returns would be many fold greater yes sir if each of the motor vehicle owners owner in the state would put up 1362 per year for a period of 10 years the state road commission with federal financial assistance could give him miles of high quality con crete roads to run on which would radiate bioni aiom salt lake city to practically every important center of the state and to bordering states unless our state road commission is given access to such a source of revenue very few but gravel roads can call be 30 built and it costs about 22 cents more per mile to operate the average car on gravel than it does on good hard pavement like concrete according to very accurate data compiled by president F R white of the american association of state highway officials fici als not only that but we all know from long experience that a gravel road costs a lot of money to I 1 maintain under the best of conditions and andin in a dry country such as ouis is soon ien gendered dered almost wholly unfit for travel even by a relatively light traffic every thinking and wo worthwhile utahn should get behind endorse and work for the richfield proposal every motor owner should be for it as it will provide him with as good a track to run his car on as the tracks over which the best railroads of the country tn ale aie operated we are with you richfield and with you strong we indeed congratulate you for your daring your intelligent effort and spirit of broad mindedness in giving to utah your road proposal which indeed would make for A better greater and grander utah our present state load commission commission has after all pointed the way avay b by building such excellent concrete roads let there lye be more of the kind |
