Show DRASTIC MEASURES S authorized FOR PRE OF FIRES special cial to th the e richfield reaper in view of the extraordinarily dangerous forest tire fire situation arising from the prolonged drought throughout the entire northwestern nor th western portion of the united states the use of drastic measures to prevent fortt forest fires was authorized by chief forester W B greeley in a letter to all forest officers in this region states district forester R H rutledge led ge of the ogden office these measures have been be en authorized tor for many years by the secretary secre tary 0 of agriculture ri for use uee in periods of extreme tire fire hazard and include the prohibition of smoking in the forest camping and building of camp tires fires without permits the enforcement to the letter of all clauses in timber sale contracts rela relating fing to the burning and ade adequate quat protection ot of forests in the vicinity of dawm sawmills ills and lumbering camps will also be necessary roads other than public roads upon the Nati national forests may be closed if conditions avar arrant not only to prevent the entrance of the general public into parts of the forest where the hazard is great but also to keep the roads clear for the necessary fire fighters ss as such roads are often narrow and poor and any interference with travel upon them might mean a great deal to the tire fire fighters no blanket restrictions are to be put into effect the exercise of 0 this authority resting with the district forester upon recommendation recommend alon aion of the different forest supervisors scattered throughout the entire region who will act as necessary in view of the tire fire hazard upon their own forests the greater part it if not all of the restrictions would be entirely unnecessary if users oi of the forests and visitors camping out upon them would use the utmost care with fire during such dry weather a as Is now being suffered throughout this region it has reduced the forests to tinder like condition fit at an unusually P early arly date in the year the forester in his letter has asked for the fullest public operation cooperation co which is of 0 course absolutely necessary in the present situation and will do much to prevent great conflagrations flag rations |
