Show REDUCING OF WAR IVAR DE since the beginning of the present administration the force of civilian employees of the war department in the district of columbia has been reduced more than one half on march 3 1921 this force numbered and on this date the number is this is a reduction of nearly 62 52 per cent in less than two years the prewar pre war strength in washington was 2911 when the armistice was signed the strength was during approximately the sam sain period March marcha 3 1921 december r 31 1922 the date of the latest report of the number of civilian employees in the field the entire force of civilian employees of the war department part ment in washington and elsewhere els e was wag reduced from to this is a reduction of 42 or over 47 per cent the annual saving effected by these reductions t amounts to more than 51 the prewar pre war strength of 0 civilian employees of 0 the war department wherever employed was so that the total on december 31 1922 was only 1476 in excess of the prewar strength during the war however ho w two new services were developed devel op these two services air and chemical warfare have today a total of employees which number should be deducted in making a comparison with the present strength and the prewar drewar pre war strength of war department p part ment employees making this deduction the total civilian strength of the war department wherever employed is today loss less than it was before the war |
