to boost sevier county and richfield to the skies and we may feel highly repaid for the hospitality extended to the editors of the state when they assembled here for their semiannual semi annual convention veri tion the first week of september an excellent article was written by the oldest member of the utah state press association 1 I E diehl past president pies ident of the or organization in his bis paper the mammoth record so excellent is this article that we take great pleasure in reprinting it to it its s full extent it reads ye yc delibes tiit at richfield and fish liddo puh puh pull pub and the flivver spun around the corner and headed for the press meeting at richfield friday afternoon down the canyon through the goshen gap and on to nephi Tep hl the record force sped but on account of the bum roads dennis wood keeps on his side of the county it was late when we arrived at the county seat at we headed up salt creek canyon passing the plaster works and the trail leading to the ranger station back of old mount nebo soon wo we entered i sanpete county and reached fountain green passing successively moroni Mo and ephraim until the beautiful banti temple loomed out of the night here we e hotel ed for the night expecting to be out right bright and early in the morning during the early hours however manti went wet the word has evidently not yet reached all the newspaper boys when the heavens ceased weeping we ve were again on the way speeding over San petes concrete road along the arrow head trail San petes cluster of towns has the he daylight appearance of prosperity but the only night aniu amusements we noticed in passing was chasing ducks and their quack quack relieved the stillness tp liness of the quiet air after passing the gunnison sugar factory and the burgh of axtell we reached the boundary of prosperous sevier county and already began to scent the hearty welcome awaiting us before reaching salina we crossed the salt lake meridian the only sensation produced however was a bloodcurdling blood curdling upward leap and a corresponding drop to earth up the prolific sevier valley we passed on to richfield where the gang had already gathered in solemn conclave it was a solemn occasion as the ladles ladies had already been whisked annay aay to enjoy the time of their lives at Richt Rich ields fields bathing resort on their return they declared there was not a man to be seen about forty newspapers of the state were represented and each one present was edified by experiences and conditions that prevail in various sections that will enable him to ledurn to his own town and utilize the inspirations received in making better papers on the evening prior to our arrival a banquet was given to the members of the press at the johnston hotel by the richfield commercial club and it is rumored that the good people of that place were kept hustling all night to provide sufficient provender prove lider to fill the aching voids ot of the visitors who evidently had been fasting for an indefinite time in order to do full justice to the occasion at the close of the mornings business session the gang was invited to the third ward meeting house where the members of the farm bureau entertained at a program and a tray laden with home products including carrots made of cheese cantaloupe sundaes sundnes sun daes sandwiches cake ote etc concluding N with ith a watermelon bust on the lawn outside an afternoon session was held and at night a concert was given at the opera house in honor 0 of f the utah press association followed by a ball the musical numbers were a surprise to the visitors and showed exceptional talent many of the voices were ivere remarkable and would do justice to any occasion the high school band comprised of boys and girls of the richfield school was without doubt the best amateur local band that it has been our pleasure to hear and the people of sevier county should feel proud of its achievements much of the credit tor for its success is due to the very capable leader at the close of tho the afternoon session ye scribe enjoyed the pleasure of a visit to the delightful home of dr and mrs markus of the richfield reaper where an appetizing inner dinner N was as served by the charming and talented hostess hoste ss it was due to the urgent invitation of dr markus Alark and his estimable wife that the members of tho association were induced to go to richfield and much credit Is due to them for the royal roval entertainment tain ment accorded us its there it was nas our first visit to thrifty richfield and we were very much interested in the remarkable little city of the south it lias has a live commercial club and a group of brick business blocks with enterprise enter enterprising pris ing business men who are reaching out to develop file resources of that part of the state farm products and livo live stock are the chief industries yet developed but others aro are beginning to materialize A fish hatchery at glenwood enwood GI only a few miles distant has been established and will raise more than a million trout this year to stock the streams coal and metal mining will add nia materially tori ally to the wealth of sevier county and tho the scenic attractions only need more publicity to bring more tourists to view the majestic handiwork of nature salina canyon and fish lake present great possibilities tor for promotion sevier county has more forest reserves than any other county in the state the mantl manti forest reserve extends into sevier county on the norlbert nori norl hest best the fillmore reserve on the west tho the beaver reserve on the southwest and the fish lake forest reserve at sunday morning wo avo started for fish lake over the excellent ec ellent state road foad which has baden b een built re bently to that superb summer resort passing the fish ha hatchery hery tillery we stopped long enough to see a half million fry we followed the scenic I 1 up the mountain side and obtained a splendid view of the productive valley for miles in the distance could be seen Burr burrville ville and and the green stretches of firm farm lands the sides of the mountains are streaked in venetian betlan brown and white as we pass up grade for seven miles along the winding way which has been chi selled from the steep sleep hills and in many places with nias masonry onry with strong fences at the dangerous points point the top of the ridge Is reached at about feet altitude when the road drops down about feet and after winding among the aspens ashens we catch our first view of the beautiful fish lake our host mr lawson took us its to his cabin on the shore of the lake where we e a delightful breakfast v aich ho he prepared for us its after which re T e went by boat to fish lake resort being the first of the part party y to arrive fish lake is a beautiful body of water clear and cold 1 miles achors and 7 miles long upon our arrival we were greeted bv mrs nard who assigned us one of the rustic mountain cabins and informed us its that at a trout dinner would be served with the compliments of the resort management we wandered along the shore and watched the anglers casting and perhaps landing a speckled beauty b those who are not satisfied with ordinary sized trout go to the middle of the lake where the big on ones es roam and are able to bring back a mackinaw ranging from ten to twenty pounds maybe and trout weighing an much as twenty nine pounds have I 1 een caught there had we not ii some 0 of the tle ing big ones one we woul I 1 have consider consi dp I 1 flits a fish story when the or the gang arrive and that familiar melody of the langs all here was sung sting some went angl nr johnny jones and mrs cooper rowed to the middle of the lake and ar d declared that the fish out oui the cpr so ravenous that they md had to use their oars to keep heep them from jumping into tho the boat and it ohp dinner hour tour fish stories and others broke out in rhyme ahil 1 lie he remainder were ivere too full for utterance johnny jones brought his balloons and whistles and everyone was just as young as lie he used to ro inviting cabins and the sleep of the just as the breezes sou soughed glied through the aspen leaves about 1100 the next nel morning after a bounteous breakfast most of the press members took to their olmes box rII elder cr lounial utah is a wonderful state before making the trip to a beautiful little paradise down iu in southern utah richfield the writer was of the opinion that northern utah atall cache valley ith lier her wonderful resources be beautiful auti ful towns mountain streams and paved highways the be bear ar river ralley falley with its vast fields of golden main grain sugar beets apple and peach orchards and the wonderful resources and scenic places to be found in weber and davis counties was the garden spot of the bee hive state but way down south in the sevier valley is another garden spot of the earth rich in most moat everything and probably pio bably evl why the county seat is called richfield A feature that pleased the newspaper men was the musical talent found at richfield the high school band twenty two all in uni uniform forin played playe several classical numbers at the concert saturday evening vocal selections duets ducts quartets etc under linder the direction of john hood I 1 a 1 scotchman who can himself sing like the famous harry lauder were exceptionally pleasing and entertaining this concert was all that one could expect in a city the size of salt lake and to john H hood much in I 1 tell credit is due tor for the musical talent to be found in richfield and rid the le ft best evidence of high mora moral 1 stan standards in a community is good music for the trash of the world do not enjoy high class music richfield is headquarters for fish lake aho the greatest recreation grounds in the mountains and fillmore ria nation forests the lake abounds in fish and ma makes tilt this an anglers paradise thero there are two resorts established there with hotel and camping accommodations and kincl bouts and fishing tackle are handy the editors spent one lay day at this aliis resort and had the time of their lives fishing boating and feasting at the expense of tho the management and the good people of richfield |
