Show FOREST protection WEEK by IS v A 1 WOODBURY it is authoritatively reported that governor bamberger intends to proclaim the week of may 23 to 29 as forest protection week it is intended that this week shall be devoted to bringing to the attention of the public the necessity of protecting our forests from all sorts of evils and damage chief among these evils find and dangers and having the most prominent place on the program for the week is the lire fire danger to the fai casts the object I 1 is to reduce man made fires ires to a minimum and this is a very worthy object sinco since what is more important to the proper ranches than a plentiful supply of timber limber it Is used in our houses our barns stables corrals fences head rates grates our wagons and in many of 0 our farming implements A lack of a plentiful local supply is preventing many of us from properly prop eily cily developing our places with sheds stock block shelters and all various other necessities ince the cost of imported lumber is practically prohibitive but important as is this phase of the question our fire danger in III this section of the state is very low and our man made fires of today are very few in number one other danger to our forests is probably more important in this county this is tho danger of erosion who has not seen the muddy streams that come from every canyon and hollow during heavy storms and who has failed to note the great washes and gullies cut in nearly all of our mountain valleys and the great fans of rocks and sediment deposited at the mouths of many of our canyons such erosion takes from the mountains the best part of the soil washing out the soil nutrients and carrying away the part best suited to tho production of plants such erosion if allowed to continue indefinitely will leave only the poorest soil which in ill turn will produce not only a poorer class of timber but also a poorer class of 0 forage for our stock which is also a factor or of vital importance and of immediate concern continued cro sion would mean 1 a I decreased number of 0 stock on the range this erosion question is also vitally tied up with tho the question of water r supply whore we have reservoirs the silt is gradually filling them up and leaving just that much less room for storing water where we do not dot have storage facilities in III the shape of reservoirs we must depend upon storing the water in the ground and expect it to hol hold d the water and distribute it to us in the shape of regular stream flow with heavy erosion going on most of the water will run oti off in floods and in corder to store more of it in the ground we should develop a better ground cover oi of vegetation eta tion the condition or of some parts of our range is truly alarming and the public should waro wako up to the fact it would be very fitting tor for the various church and ward organizations izat ions throughout the county to make a special forest protection day on sunday may 2 23 the local officers of the forest service at richfield salina monroe or koosharem Koo sharem will be glad to cooperate in arranging programs and furnishing information and data to make such programs worth while |
