| Show REGIMENT OF THE BIG GUN CORPS recruiting drive for the regiment now no on in richfield in accordance with the plan of the war department to localize the regiments of the regular army the 5 artillery C A C has been allotted to utah and for the past two months soldiers of the regiment have been in utah telling young men of the opportunities offered by the regiment three the members of the regiment are in Ri clifield today and will remain in this city until sunday they iro are captain C C terry sergeant homer benoit and sergeant earl budd this organization has an excellent war record it was formed at doston boston harbor went to france by way of england early in 1918 was in action at chateau thierry Thi orry saint mihiel 1 I near verdun and in the drive through the argonne forest which ended the war early in 1919 the regiment returned to new york where it remained a few weeks then went to san francisco where it was stationed on the south bank of the golden gate for a few months in october 1919 the regiment moved with the artillery brigade C A C to camp lewis tacoma washington where it is now preparing for target practice to be held there this summer the artill armillary Ar tillary ry is motorized and is equipped with twenty four mm a bout about 6 inches french billoux rifles the aristocrats of mobile artillery which lull itin on rubber tires are drawn by caterpillar tractors and throw a ninety five pound high explosive shell ten miles besides the guns and tractors tho the regiment is equipped w with uh a mobile repair shop with electrically driven lathe drill grinder and air compressor for an air hammer and an oxyacetylene welding outfit this repair shop is mounted on a four wheel drive truck and is driven by a dynamo directly connected to a four cylinder marine engine which is also mounted on the truck one of these trucks was on display in this city for two days of this week the other equipment of the regiment consists of 20 five passenger touring cars 10 reconnaissance or staff observation cars in one of which the party who visited this city travels seventy five motorcycles with sidecars four wheel drive ammunition and supply trucks four mobile wireless sets complete field telephone system with switchboards and nearly a hundred telephones and several complete sets of instruments and equipment tor for surveying map making and orientation en including tian sits azimuth instruments plane tables prismatic compasses chains and drafting outfits the regiment is in the ast 1st artillery brigade C A C which maintains at camp lewis schools for training men in the handling liand ling of all the equipment mentioned above in addition to the brig brigade ado schools men of the regiment have access to the camp lewis schools which train traill men for commercial telegraph and radio work auto and motorcycle repairing blacksmithing and give courses in all common school branches such commercial courses as bookkeeping shorthand business english and in spanish and french so that men serving in the coast artillery corps are offered particular advantages for schooling in III the modern artillery regiments the soldiers spend ver very little time at drills which might become monotonous in the artillery there are no springfield rifles all men are armed with tho the colt 45 calibre automatic tonia tic pistol and after travel is free from worries about the high cost of living is improved physically and it if he desires can save money with which to start in III his trade when he returns to civil life at the end of
