soldiers in action SIDNEY E MANNING corporal co G infantry corporal manning received the distinguished service cios choss for ous gallantry near breuvannes Breu vannes france july 28 11 1918 18 corporal manning was wal in charge of an automatic rille rifle squad during tin an assault by ills his battalion on the strongly fortified heights beights overlook ing the river for the purpose of exploiting the successful passage of tile stream during the on the lie hill liis his platoon commander was killed and just as the crest was readied reached tile the platoon sergeant was wounded corporal manning LlIan nIng then assumed command of the platoon which was ns near the center of tile the assaulting line and was meeting with desperate resistance though lie he himself was severely wounded bounded and was nas the only survivor of ills squad this soldier let led forward the 35 effectives remaining in the platoon against an enemy strong po point int which was wired and defended by
