Show SALINA C OAL VIENS MAY HELP FUEL several se cv veins vein in tile the cannon cin call be 13 worked to advantage and fuel favl supplied to tills this valley JESSE NIGHT R SAID TO BE interested the bis big veins vein of carbon and emery counties undoubtedly LIC under the surface on this side of the range mining contract let salinas coal veins will help the fuel supply this winter there are great beds of coal in the canyon that should be developed tile the coal that is being brought here from the big mining region in carbon county can just as well be sent in another direction if the big coal fields lying at salinas door is properly worked mr wilson the mining engineer in charge of the development work at the vein lying 12 miles up the canyon has been in salt lake the past week or ten days the contract for the mining of the coal and the placing it in the chute at the mouth of the mine has been let to a monroe man and he has been busy trying to secure miners to work the vein before long there will be a sufficient quantity of coal at the chute to sup uly all comers the vein is three feet in thickness and it is an excellent quality of soft coal like all the coal of utah measures it is tree free from the sulphur rok rock encountered in some veins known to the miners as duggar the th e coal carries a high percentage of fixed carbon and a small percentage of ash with a fair percentage of vol ati Irli which consists largely of rebin and tar there are other splendid veins of coal in ili the canyon lying just below Sawtooth on the south side of the creek is another vein or rather two veins which gives a total of 56 inches of coal but this carries a small vein of slate between the two coal veins which makes the coal co al rather hard to keep clean however this vein could be worked to advantage still another vein known as the gilson vein lies on the south side of the creek on the east end of sawtooth this vein was reported to be six feet in it thickness but for some unaccountable reason no effort lias has ever been made to operate it since sam gilson opened it years ago jesse jcsse knight is said to be interesting himself tar far to the east in the canyon in the meadow gulch region and it is alleged that a force of mei me has been at work with a diamond drill taking soundings of the veins of coal lying under the surface at that point just over the ridge to the cast there are splendid veins of i coal and there is litt little le doubt but I 1 what tile the same veins lie on this side if development is carl cabied led far below the surface the coal measures of utah which run through cat carbon bon and emery counties consist of a series of coal veins ranging in thickness from a few inches to as high as 15 to 20 feet the big vein lies lowest in the ser series gerfe fe and it can undoubtedly be found in fit salina canyon it if depth dep th it j I 1 sought with anith jesse knight in it the held field there is no good reason why the salina coal veins should not eventually develop into a great coal mining region |
