| Show y MW MSS THE HELPFUL DO DOG G there are arc heroes oi of many kinds kinas said daddy brave men who fight for liberty firemen who do not fear burning houses and who rescue people under all sorts of danger to themselves there are arc those who will go in the water after people who have become exhausted and who have not been abl able to swim any more and so have cried for help and this Is very dangerous for the rescuer as often these people get nervous and so frightened that they dont halt half realize what they are doing and try to pull their rescuer under the water in their efforts to grab him then there are brave policemen and many splendid brave people in the world but besides people there are many horses and dogs who do fine things I 1 we have all heard of the dogs who have saved children from the water and of those who have saved people from fires in fact sometimes some of us feel very much ashamed when we think how fine hire are the creatures who cant talk and understand and know all we do but they do know so much especially dogs and horses and yet there are many many others who show us all the time what a great great deal they do know this evening I 1 want to tell you of a i dog who was helpful very helpful his master and ills his mistress and all tile the friends of his master and mistress were working very hard they were trying to raise money for the red ked cross organization so barked pleasantly at them that a great deal of suffering could be made less and a great deal of comfort taken to thousands of people the dog was a beautiful white dog he had bad a handsome head and such beautiful white fur that eliat to look at him any one would think that he was simply a dog who liked to be petted and spoiled and that he was selfish and enjoyed sitting on a velvet cushion or going for a drive in a beautiful motorcar that is you might have thought all that until you looked into his face for by the look in his bis eyes you could tell in an instant how fine he was his eyes were so clear so intelligent he looked at you wisely as if he wanted to know all lie he could and wanted to let you know that he be tried to be a good sensible dog ll 11 1 T I wonder his master said one day if we give some work to whitey to dor do and the other members of the family said well well all be so busy that whitey wont get a great deal of attention that Is we cant have so many walks and romps it would be nice if he could help us in this work of collecting the money to fo help everybody who Is suffering now whitey barked and wagged his tall tail his eyes seemed to be trying to speak for him as he barked his bow wow wow he was trying to say let me work too I 1 would like to help I 1 want to be a useful dog 1 11 I 1 have an idea said ills his master 11 what the others all asked well have him collect too ho he can wear a harness across his back a nice light harness and attached to it can call be a rod hod cross box then he can have a little boll bell attached to his collar so BO that it will ring as lie runs along well see how low much money lie he can get in his box bos from all the talking whitey knew that something had happened and that it was about him how pleased ho he was lao ho barked for joy the very next nest day wore the box bos and not only did his boll bell ring as he ran along alone hut but lie went up to people as they passed barked pleasantly nt at them and then shook his bo box x they could see sec what was written ritten on tho the bo box x rind and too they had read in the paper of the work whitey was doing and alagot everyone put money in White ys little box ile ho barked at people in the bust nez 3 section and then lie he would run down near where the great ships were and pet get collections from the shipping people he knew when he be lad had a i day for his box rattled merrily then with noth lots and inte of coins and his master was so proud of him and in several months whitey whiter the dog col collected acted more than f five ive thousand dollars to help hell grown people I 1 |
